Black Chrome Mufflers on Le Mans IV...Refinish?
« on: March 21, 2016, 02:34:10 PM »
Hello Folks, The oem mufflers on my 85 Le Mans need to be refinished. they are a black chrome , but have some light scratches, and a little bit of pitting.  Has anyone had any luck with a product to apply or have applied on these to make them look good? I would like to have a gloss black finish if possible, so would rather not use flat black high heat paint. How about ceramic coating, or powder coating? can that be done to old mufflers? are there any finishes  one can do with a paint gun/compressor that will hold up, and look nice?
Thanks
Rick

I had my LM-IV mufflers ceramic coated in a semi-gloss black. There are a lot more color choices now so you can probably find something pretty close or at least something you'll be happy with.

I did the entire exhaust system on mine and was pleased with it.

Jet Hot or M&R Coatings in Kodak, TN.
My friend said Kodak when he had his headers done.
Sorry for the error.

Had no idea people were using PVD for automotive parts.

I have two sets of wheels with snowtires done in PVD.  They will scratch & chip. It will not reflect like chrome will. Okay for what it is but I won't do it again.  One set needs to be redone because of chipping.

Gloss black ceramic coating will look good and it is very durable.

Let us know what you find Rick, I have a black Cagiva exhaust that needs the same treatment. They looked so good in that black chrome when new, I'd love to bring them back. The alternative is not nearly as nice.

Sigh.

As turning my formerly near-pristine Bassa into the Bassa Rat progresses, I've already resigned myself to flat black high heat paint on the pipes.

I did run high heat white for a while on my Eldo, and it was nice, but the upkeep is more.

We now return to the thread in progress.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Thanks a bunch, guys, for all the replies. PVD looks very interesting in black chrome, but chipping like John mentioned concerns me. Ive hear someone in the Phoenix area does Jet Hot coating, and that may be the way to go, if they can do a nice semi gloss to satin black. I would also do the head pipes, as I have already sprayed those with flat black VHT high heat paint.I will let you all know what I decide to try.
Rick.

I had the headers of an Aprilia Tuono ceramic coated in gloss black, but the coating started to crack up.
I had it re coated in satin black and have had my LM2 headers and cans done in satin too; very nice finish and robust too.
The pic will give you an idea of what it looks like.
