1000 sp gas cap key
« on: March 28, 2016, 01:30:59 PM »
I have a gas cap lock that will not open.

Should the ignition key also work on the gas cap key?

The number on the lock is 1581.

Anyone have one I can buy?

Any information is appreciated.
Thanks...Alan

Back story...I bought the 1000sp. then had surgery on both sholders and am now just getting ready to sell it,so, I would like to get the lock working.
I did not check to see if it worked when I bought it .(lesson learned)

Gas cap lock should match ignition key.  Unless either lock has been changed.  Spray some WD40 in the stuck lock.

The key blank is Taylor F79-1 made for Fiat   I got 1 for my CX100

Should be the same as the fork lock also, on the neck.  Maybe ign was changed. Should be same as BMW blank used on airheads.

The fork lock should be a Neiman and different than the ignition and gas tank flap lock. At least it was on every Tonti I ever owned.

Alan: assuming that the ignition switch is the original, there should be a (very tiny) number stamped right next to the key slot. If that's the same as the gas tank flap lock number, then it should work. Maybe the lock is just dry and could use a little Lock-Ease squirted into it.

If you need a key cut to code 1581, these guys can do it: http://keys4classics.com/html/MotoGuzzi.html

If it is indeed the correct key, try pushing down on the key while turning it to unlock. The rubber bumpers for the lid have hardened causing it to be not-so-cushy when trying to unlock it.

I'm not sure there was any standard about keys on older Tontis.  My Mille has three keys.  One for ignition, one for gas cap, and one for fork lock and seat.  I've heard of one that has four keys, and the fork lock and seat keys are not the same.  I believe that bike was bought new and has not had any locks replaced.

If you get a double sided key cut ask them to cut the ignition on one side and the tank cap on the other then you don't need two keys.

I didn't know any Guzzis had double sided keys, Roy.  My Mille has all single sided ones.

Oh, no problem, I just wondered.  The idea is very interesting.  I wonder if I could get one double sided key made that fits the two Fords we have here.

Can you tell I haven't worked on that stuff in last 10yrs. I'm wrong and get those old models mixed up that's why I'm retiring. I'll have time to relearn on my own stuff. Having senior moments(short term memory) I shouldn't even be posting if I'm not sure. All I would have had to do is look in the garage.

That bike should have the trap door over the gas cap. It's suppose to be the same key as the ignition. If you can't get it to work, gently pry up on the front edge of the cover, you'll bend the hinge a little, you can bend it back later. Now you should be able to use an 8mm or 5/16" open end and take out the 2 bolts and remove the cover. The tumbler is just held in with a snap ring. Pop out the tumbler, remove all the discs and the lock will open with any key that fits or a screw driver. How much for the bike?

Or take the lock to a good locksmith and have him make a key.

I don't like locking gas caps or fork locks. I have "losethekeyofobia" One key per bike is enough.

Not if they are chip keys
Ace Hardware made me a chip key for the Taurus for less than the Ford dealer wanted for just the blank.

One is a chip key and one is not, so I might be able to have a key cut for both, and program the chip for the one that needs it.  I'll have to check to see if the key blanks look the same.

We bought a couple key blanks through eBay for something like $5 each, and had them cut at the local farm supply store where we couldn't get the guy to charge us anything, then programmed them ourselves according to the procedure in the manual.

Edit:  Nuts.  The key blanks aren't even close.

I have trouble getting my key all the way into the gas cap lock sometimes.  Have to wiggle and push to get it all the way down.

That is what I did when I lost the key to the trap door on my SPIII.

If someone bought my bike they'd find a different key for every lock.  I like the idea of getting rid of the tumblers though.  I am going to do that this weekend (I never liked locking gas caps).  I may even do that to the seat lock as well, get rid of another key.

My first Honda did not have a key.  I converted it to a single circuit breaker that was 'hidden' under the seat.  Flip it on and go.  I may do that with the Guzzi one day.

Thanks for the responses.  :thumb:

It is the lock on the tank flap.

I'm leaning toward the remove tumbler thing.

The 1000SP is a leaner sidecar rig with a trailer.

PM me if you want more information.

I'll put it in for sale forum in a week or so.

Thanks...Alan
