Moto Jeans
« on: April 01, 2016, 05:39:30 PM »
I do believe it ATGATT as much as possible.  I have to fly international and can't take any hold stowed luggage.  Will be on a moto tour on the other side.  I can wear my jacket and boots on the plane.  Have to borrow a helmet.  Thinking about a pair of "moto jeans" so that I can wear them casually as well as when riding.  Does anyone have real world comfort experience?  Not just reinforced jeans, but something with critical point padding.  So far looking at KLIM, SPEED &STRENGTH, UGLYBRO.  I'll be pretty much living in these for two weeks.  Would be nice to take out the padding during the flight and evening dinners.  Opinions please.

I have a couple of pairs of the Bilt "iron worker" jeans from cycle gear.  They have kevlar sewn into the butt and knees, they also come with removable knee armor.  They run around $90.

I also have a pair of Drayko jeans that have the kevlar panels but no spots for armor.

The Drayco jeans fit and look more like a standard pair of jeans.  The Bilt jeans fit a little looser and have some extra denim panels sewn into the knees.  I've worn both all day to work without any problem.

I recently sprung for a pair of Klim Fifty 1 jeans. They have removable armor, and are very comfy, especially without the armor in place. They look great off the bike too. Not cheap at $289, but I'm glad I got them. My other riding jeans are Draggin and Bilt. The Klims are superior in every way. They are made out of cordura denim.

I have a couple pairs of these.  They're comfortable and true to size.  You can fit armor underneath.  Sometimes I ride to work and wear them all day.  They look smart and are easy on the budget.

Here you go.  Diamond Gusset Defender jeans.  First, they are Kevlar lined.  But WAY more important they have this nice gusset in the crotch.  It's fantastic.  No bunching up of "the boys" and there's some room so you don't sweat nearly as much.

In another life I tested all kinds of stuff for distributors, dealers, and such.  These pants were the far and away best I used.  Some Bohn armor under them and you have casual pants that double as riding pants with protection with the Bohn product.  As a bonus, you'll be much more comfortable on any long trip where you need to sit.  Don't discount just how comfortable that gusset is.

Anyway, my .02.

I like Draggin Jeans.  They sell armor that velcros in place.  If you want the hip armor get it a little large in the waist.  I've worn them or Diamond Gusset jeans every day to work for about 5 years now.  Wore the Draggin Jeans on a 3000 mi trip a few years ago.  The kevlar in the Draggin version was a bit thicker and more comfortable (they have like a brushed layer against the skin).

I crash tested a pair of Draggin' Jeans a few years ago. The denim on the knees was completely ripped off. The underlying Kevlar showed no signs of impact whatsoever. I had friction burns on my knees but my skin never made contact with the asphalt. I'd call that successful product performance.

I wear the Duluth Trading Fire Hose work pants with knee pads.  Very versatile and abrasion resistant.  I sprayed them with water repellent and they keep me dry in all but a prolonged rain.

If ATGATT is important here at home, it's even more important in a strange land. Mail your real gear over there. Mail it back when done.

My two favorites are Draggin' Jeans and Diamond Gusset. I've tried others, but haven't found ones I like in that price range.

I've used several brands...the one that worked best for me is the Draggin' Jeans. I have a pair over 10 years old that are still 100%. I would like to try the Diamond Gussets, though. They sound like they have a key comfort feature...

Tour of Normandy by Guzzi Falcone in June.  No motorways.  Hotel to memorial site to hotel.  Repeat.  No really long distances or blistering speeds.

Prohibitive cost.  Probably cheaper to throw it all away when the tour is over.

If I were taking and international tour, I think I'd opt for the best clothing.  Not just for protection but also for comfort to match the climate.  I'd consider purchasing gear when I got there or to ship it from home in advance of my travel.

I have a pair of Ugly Bros "Echo-K" kevlar jeans, and used to have a Dainese pair.

I like the Ugly Bros because the kevlar is actually woven into the denim, as opposed to the Dainese where it's just panels of kevlar. Plus, the Ugly Bros actually look and fit like a normal pair of jeans, unlike the Euro-dork design of the Dainese.*

The UglyBros are really well-made, from Korea, but top quality. I found them on clearance, but their full price is pretty high.

*otherwise, I am a big Dainese fan--just not of their jeans.
