but have been offered a 1994 XL883 for $1,000..probably in pretty nice condition but I don't know mileage yet.. the lowest priced one on CL locally is $2500.. Is this something worth flipping? or do they all languish on CL and never sell?
hope to get pics Sunday but want to know about this model before I go in.. thx and no girlie bike/HD bashing jokes needed..

 Offer $700.00  One friend talked another friend into convincing his cousin that loaning a grand for the purposes of buying an old Sportster was a great idea . Yeah boy , they were all gonna make big bucks off of this thing . Only problem was , it sat for about a year , and after replacing a battery and some other stuff , seems they lost a $100.00

The HD 883 sounds like a sound deal if you do not have to spend any more cash or eat up time. It may be a 883 Hugger, lowered for the shortys among us! It is tax return time - a good time to sell.
The Sportster is a durable bike, a nice entry level Harley, a nice entry level motorcycle.

Location is just as important as condition.

It seems what is hard to sell at a good price gets sold out here for twice as much.

Sell a Sportster in real good condition, low miles for $2500? Gone. Oh, you want gas in the tank too? $2510.

It is a Hugger,
"20,310 miles. I bought it a couple of years ago. It has a new tire mounted on the back, and a new front tire not mounted (or actually needed yet). I put new slightly longer, heavier shocks on the back, and I padded up the seat a bit. I have an extra seat for it. It has the 5 speed tranny."

I saw it a tear or 2 ago and thought then I'd never want it but he offers me good prices always.. got 2 KLR's from him well below book.

I've had 2 883s now. The first, I got in the Army when they originally came out and HD offered that astounding, guaranteed full purchase price on trade in deal.

Never did end up trading in or up. It proved to be such a reliable tractor that I rode the bejeepers outa it and ended up gifting it to a pal on my team when I retired from the Army.

The second happened fairly recently. A custom car builder that I know took a 800 mile, 2003 Hugger as partial payment on one of the payments for a customer's car work. My pal thought to commute on it but the tiny tank undid that.

Now, he'd been pestering me for years for a pimped-out rifle that I had. I had no desire to sell the rifle but too much self respect to venture out-of doors in broad daylight with it. Trav though, he likes the "bling"!

Anyhow, it got the rifle out of the safe and I figured I'd sell the little Spurtster on after I finished one of the other projects lining the edge of my vision.

2 years and 4,000 miles of riding stolen from Guzzis and Suzukis and I have to admit the Nearly Davidson is here to stay.

EVERY SINGLE TIME that I ride it I can't make it to the nearest feeder road without grinning.


Might be, you find yourself falling for the chick-bike.

Ride it. It may make a great coffee bike (going out for coffee) and who knows? There must be something about that folks like; you may find out what it is. For that price you could keep it around for those days you feel like a Harley. :)

I am sure you can get a $1000 worth of fun out of it. I wouldn't even think about titleing it for a few weeks  Just thash it. You might like it. At least when you are old, you can tell the grandkids,  'yep.  Back when I had a Harley.....'

Same here; iron or alloy, if it runs well, has all the parts and a clear title - all the numbers start with $2,000 though the majority hover around $3,000.

Bill is not claiming it's worth much more, I am.. from scanning CL and the KBB/NADA books.
He's an OLD man who doesn't want to deal with any buyer he doesn't know.. I'm not sure why he likes me so but from him I got a KLR for 1500 and sold it for 2400 after a year or 2 riding it. the KLR's got too tall for him..
He has a couple sons but they live way out on the west coast..
I don't have any fear there is a hidden problem with the bike, it's probably only been ridden around his suburb since he got it..

As you probably know there is a glut of HD's for sale...Sporties are selling pretty cheap.  That said, if it was local to me I would have already bought it :-)

   Other than vibration on longer rides, the pre rubber mount Evo Sportster isn't bad at all. And it will go around corners  surprisingly fast. And replacing a restrictive air filter and  the usual shorty pipes with a properly designed two into one exhaust really wakes up the engine. And contrary to popular belief you can ride a Harley in the same gear as any other bike

In the Chicago CL market right now there are 113 Sporties for sale. There are 10 of 1990s vintage 4 of which are 1200s. Average asking price of the 883s is $4860 but the includes one outlier, a dreamer asking $8500. If you remove the dreamer the average is $4140. The range on that group is $2800 to $6000. If you want to flip and it does not require too many $ to make ready for sale I would say you could make a little cash in the right market.

I had an 883R, 2002.
It was reliable, vibrated and was slow.
It was very relaxing to ride.
It looked good but the seating position hurt my back.
One day someone asked me if I would consider selling it; it was sold that day.

 Oddly enough that "less is more" stuff costs the same as decent stuff . Must be the panache thing at work . LOL .
