2012 V7 classic or a new 2016 V7ii special

Hi I'm New to the forum and new to  guzzi's
I've ridden and worked on mainly old British and vintage Japanese
Looking at a v7 guzzi
I can pick up a black 2012 classic for around $8000 (4,000klms) and have money left over for some accessories
Or go for a new 2016 V7 ii special 
Is the new 2016 that much better than 2012
Any advice on the matter would much appreciated

I Loooooooove my 2012 V7 Classic! They are very unique - new steel gas tank, older double-throttle-body engine. It was a one-year transition for the V7, as another member had pointed out to me. For what it's worth, insurance on a the 2012 was a bit less than it would have been for a new one  :roll eyes:

If you have the chance to ride them around, that will be how you truly decide. Your '16 would have ABS and Traction Control.. how important are those things to you? Having money left over to gear it out the way you want to would be excellent, and trust me - you'll probably end up loving the bike so much that you'll want to personalize it and make it your own.

Buying brand-new is fun, but you'll take the biggest hit on depreciation, the previous owner of the Classic took care of that for you. Although, I'd try talking the dealer down a bit.. I snagged my Classic for a grand less, and it had less than 1,000 miles on it. Give 'em hell!

You can't go wrong either way - test ride both, let the saddle do the talking. Good luck!

I've got the "old" V7 Classic, with the twin throttle bodies.  Although it's 5 speed, the 5th gear is an overdrive, so it ends up with the same gear ratio spread as a 6 speed, it's merely done over 5 instead of 6 speeds.

I see new leftover Stones, 2105, for 7K.  8K for a used '12 seems a bit dear.
I realize it's not a Special but it may afford you a bit of leverage on the price.  The '12 is also out of warrentee.

$8K is WAY to high a price for a '12.  You can find '13-'14 Stone/Specials for $5-5,500.

That said, the difference between the 2TB and 1TB motors was enough for Jay to sell his 2010 and pick up a 2013 (that he likes so much he ALSO bought a 2014).

So I know what I'd do.

So 2012 for $8000 looks pretty good even the 2014,s are still around 12,000

But if the money is an issue I can understand the draw of the metal tank 2012.

Also, is your 2012 still a 2TB engine?   IIRC, Europe got the 1TB motor in 2012, but, I don't know about Oz.
If it is a 1TB motor, then definitely go with the 2012.

I think it's more simple than that. I don't think anything with a 1TB was ever called a V7 Classic.

The test ride may well be the decider, but you can easily spend more than $A5,000 on accessories to get it how you want it. As the 2012 has the metal tank, you're ahead there, the longer range is extremely convenient. My 2 throttle body's engine runs smoother & idles lower, but the increased torque of the single throttle body is noticeable. The gearbox fill & drain plugs on the V7 II are in a much more sensible position, as is access to the clutch operating arm (and you WILL need to adjust the clutch down there occasionally). The 6 speed box is supposed to be a significant improvement. A 2 year warranty could be a comfort - I had cause to invoke the warranty on the 2010, but the 2014 has been faultless since I bought it with 4,500km & it now has 46,000.

Here is my two cents based on my 2012 V7R, with metal tank, and 2 TB, and 5 speed.  These are wonderful bikes!  Tight to break in though, so first impressions can be misleading.  The Classics are gorgeous I think.  If you really want ABS though, get the newer bike. 

I would bargain hard for the older bike though, and like you say:  stretch your dollars.
