I never felt I could catch up with his music.  He was always so far ahead I could just admire.  I always hoped he, like John Lennon, would create music into old age.  What a loss.

Sad deal, definitely a talented musician, kinda like Bowie he was out there, but in a good way. A can remember a super bowl 1/2 time performance when he nailed it. Like Jimmy Vaughn sang in his tribute to his brother,

" Heaven done called, another blues singer back home"

I think I'll go for a ride now, the paint brush I've been pushing all morning doesn't seem that important any more.  RIP Prince

According to that article, "He was very religious and adamant about not taking any sort of medication."  It would be a shame if that's what killed him.

I don't know.  I'm not big on medication, either, and take as little as possible.

I'm sure more details will emerge soon, as to the cause(s) of his passing.

The Artist Formerly Known to Have Talent....

I was an absolute fan of the early years, but somewhere around 'Purple Rain' I started losing connection with his work. An indelible stamp on the 80s, much of it through others' recordings of his work.

Taking as little as possible and adamant about not taking any sort are not the same.  I avoid unnecessary medication too, but I can tell you that a few years ago when I got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, I was happy to take Doxycycline, rather than risk death.  I maintain that I hope Prince didn't die, rather than take a medication that could have saved his life, that's all.

Medications are a funny thing.  Many of them will kill you if taken over a prolonged period of time.  The trick is to time it and only start taking them at the point at which they will prolong your life while at the same time you die naturally before the medicine is what kills you.

My dad is a pharmacist.  My wife and I are mid 50's and are not on any prescription medication.  I think my dad says something like we are in the 5% minority of the population at our age.  So if I need to take cholesterol meds at 60 to prolong my life that is probably okay as it will take till I am ~85 before they will kill me and that is about the time I will be leaving anyway so in this scenario it makes sense.

Prince was said to have had the flu in the past few weeks.  After reading that, I was thinking pneumonia may have gotten him.

Then I read his prophetic words to a crowd last week, "Wait a few days before you waste any prayers", has me wondering if he had cancer or some other terminal disease that had not been previously disclosed to the public.

I guess we'll hear soon enough.

Prince was reportedly a Jehovah's Witness, and his choices regarding medication would have reflected that set of beliefs. He had evidently declined earlier hip surgery due to the need for transfusions (forbidden by the religion), and some Witnesses express a strong reliance on faith over medicine in healing.

I was hearing in the news today that all that name change business, "The Artist Formerly Known...."  was not about vanity or publicity but an attempt to get control over his likeness, name, and music from the record company.

I salute the guy and my opinion of him has increased immensely.  Of course his musical talent was just incredible.  He was also unselfish and allowed so many singers and musicians to take the spotlight.

If that played a role it would be similar to Bob Marley, who as a Rastafarian refused an amputation of his big toe when stricken with melanoma that would have saved his life.

That was certainly true, and good reason to give him his props. Unfortunately, it also took focus (his, the record company's, and the public's) away from his work. It was a worthy battle that ended up doing no one any good...

That's one of the heaviest guitar solos ever.  I've been in the music manufacturing & performance world for most of my adult life, and Prince has long been a sleeping giant of guitar players.  This video's a perfect example of how he could level most any room.  I love the end of the clip where he just tosses the Tele up in the air & walks out from under it.

I won't claim to be a lifelong fan.  Some of his craft goes straight past me.  But there's no denying he was a brilliant talent - musician, producer, and performer.  He was a genius self-taught musician. . .and I'm told a real challenging individual to work for.

It's rumored he's got enough material produced & ready to stretch for another generation or two.  I wouldn't doubt if he's ultimately regarded as the Brian Wilson of my generation for his seemingly complete mastery of instruments, production, and an insanely prolific output.
