2012 Norge Luggage
« on: April 22, 2016, 10:47:29 PM »
So, while out running errands today and not paying close attention to the road I managed to enter and exit a rather large pot hole. I was worried the tires would go flat but nothing appeared to have happened so I continued on my way. A short time later while making a turn I heard a strange rubbing noise so I looked back and noticed that the right side saddle bag was hanging way out and down.

This is an affirmation of some discussion in 2012 about the speed warnings on the bags. Comments were made that shock was more of a concern than speed and I believe they were correct. My bag has a broken upper rear latch [that goes into the bracket] on the bike. The safety clip was still down at the lock mechanism but the post was no longer there for it to grab. I believe the latch is what kept the bag from falling off. I managed to get the bag reattached and limped home. On closer inspection I also noticed the rear wheel mud flap was also broken.

I am now on the market for a right side bag, preferably in white and the mounting bracket. Does anyone have a spare one? I don't mind buying the bracket and rear mud flap but the bags are seriously over priced. I would feel better if the upper latch clips were over-molded metal instead of straight plastic. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have not had that problem, but the Norge panniers are indeed expensive, fiddly, fragile affairs. You might try contacting Agostini in Italy (they have pretty good prices and they are next door to Moto Guzzi) or AF1 Racing in Texas (they are Piaggio's unofficial US warehouse).

One more idea: file an insurance claim. You will have to meet your deductible, and it will probably be considered a "collision," but at least you could get a new set of bags and all the other broken bits--and you could have your dealer install them for you and have his labor covered as well.

In fact, if you have a dealer nearby, you might swing by and have him work up an estimate for your insurance company beforehand.

I went this route when my Norge "fell asleep" in my driveway and slowly laid down on its left side. The check from the insurance company was about $2,200...

^ Yep. Norge number 1. I am now on Norge number 2. (It wasn't the fall that killed my first Norge; it was a speeding school teacher who did not stop for the school bus like I did.)

Thanks for the suggestions. I have found a used bag for free. I'm going to see if I can switch my cover onto the new bag and switch locks. Then all I need is hardware.

Both bags on my '07 are scuffed. looking for someone to paint them - came in around $1000. Moto Guzzi can't supply the black plastic rub strips so they would still look bad. Ordered a complete new set of bags and mounting hardware for CDN $1075.
