NGC- wiring electric fence-NGC
« on: April 25, 2016, 05:54:57 AM »
Want to put up an electric fence for a couple feeder pigs. Part of the run will be over a concrete pad.
Getting info from the charger people they said: "In order for the animal to feel a shock when standing on concrete, a two-wire system, with both hot and grounding wires on the fence line, would need to be set up."
Searching but haven't been able to find out how close the hot and ground wires can be on a post. Not as worried about them going over the top as I am under the bottom. Wrote customer service but haven't heard back from them yet.
Being such an eclectic group I thought someone may have a few ideas for me.

It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

I have never seen the two wire setup of which you speak. I would think that if you kept the cement damp for the first couple of days you have the pigs there they would get a shock or two and after that stay away from the fence even when dry as they would be afraid of it.

The voltage is low enough that if you basically keep the wires from touching, you are good to go.

You will want to space them far enough apart to force the 'juice' to travel through them for a distance, so they get the point if it.

You could alternate several hot wires and ground wires to increase the height of the fence without allowing the animals to go under it.

Pigs almost never try to get over anything, they like to root under. Run a hot and a ground together maybe 1 to 1-1/2 inches apart and only a few inches off the concrete. Do the same thing 10 inches higher up with another pair of wires. I can tell you from experience that you don't want to waste your time with those weaker systems. Get one that runs off the 110 instead of a battery and make it a hot one. They will quickly learn to leave it alone. Pigs are both smart and stubborn, so if it isn't hot every day they'll soon be out. Horses are easy. Burn them a time or two and you can run a fake line for a year, LOL.

So true.  Sometimes when I would catch ours grazing too close to the fence,, I would say-- BZZZZZTH!  They would run away, kicking up their heels, farting halfway across the pasture before they woulld stop and look back.

I've run fake lines and proved you right before - They will figure it out, usually by mistake, eventually.

I knew a short furry pony that figured out if he just got a running start and went under it that his coat protected him from most of it.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

We laid rails on the ground parallel to the fence line about 5' from the fence.  Most livestock don't like crossing rails (witness the 'cattle guards' at on-ramps in range country).  It made the 'lectric fence less necessary, and they definitely don't like being between the fence and the rails.  Don't know if it works for hogs.

Also, the SNAP! sound of the charger becomes familiar to livestock and will condition them to avoid an uncharged fence if you broadcast the sound from nearby.
