Rubber noise damping things on cylinder
« on: May 14, 2016, 02:39:23 AM »
I took my sp-3 for the technical inspection this week and as it is in Switzerland it is very strict and yes it failed. They complained that the rubber noise reduction, damper things were missing. I have to install them and perform a new inspection. Yes that is Switzerland. In there type specification it sais that they have to be there and that's how it is. Now the bike is grounded. I managed to source some new ones. The question I where should I install them? It is on the cylinder or on the cylinder head and where. I guess the cylinder. They are about 60*15mm and have 4 ribs that is going in between the cooling fins. Does some one have some photos showing where they should be installed.

Jocke.............. .

The little rubber bisquits are there to pevent the air cooling fins from ringing and sounding like an older japanese bike.

I use them on the Café Sport. I selected the area in front and behind the cylinder, towards the centerline. Out of sight and the front one starting in the gap between the uppermost and second fin. The second one at the rear starts between the second and third fins and stops between the two lower ones. Seems to help but I do not have a sound analyzer.

Here's where Guzzi originally put them on the small block. I would *assume* the big block is similar.

How can something that it never had from the factory be "missing"?

Ahhh. I was wondering why I'd never seen them on any big block I've worked on.

On my Suzuki TU250X there are several individual rubber pads located at various points. The service manual has a diagram that provides details for the specific locations. I  know this doesn't help but perhaps a service manual would show the locations?

""Yes that is Switzerland. In there type specification it sais that they have to be there and that's how it is.""

I would say if the Swiss technical inspection claims they had them, they did have them. At least in Switzerland. It would make sense on a full faired air cooled bike bike with big finns.
But I can`t be of further help,- sorry.

And yet, it seems the this metal bits of the exhaust make all the noise. Honda designed the CB1100 fins thin to MAKE this noise, yet I only hear the exhaust.

I'm confused.

The Swiss are allergic to fun things. As very all know noise and speed is fun so they do everything possible to make it impossible to have fun. Have you ever heard of Swiss humor.

I'm confused.  Is this a BB (1000cc) SP or a small block?  The SP's I've seen are all big blocks, but I know the rest of the world is different.

The dampers on my BB guzzis are little (~10mm) round pucks that are inserted at the factory between the fins in a stacked fashon that makes it look like a bolt run through the fins if you don't know what you're looking at.  You can't see them at all unless you get close.  I can't imagine why anyone would want to pry them out, so I'm guessing yours has them too.  Look between the fins fore and aft, about 20mm in from the edge.  If some things appear to be bolts running through the fins, there's your dampers.

I'm assuming that if you're asking where they go, the inspector doesn't know where they go either, or he would have told you.  Help him look and the whole thing could go away.  There could also be supplemental dampers like redrider mentions, but I'm pretty sure you can make a case for that's what those things between the fins are.

[edit]

Here's an example from my files  -- efi -- your layout may be different.  See the stacks of dampers top and bottom?  I tried to make the one front and center stand out.

small blocks I know nothing about.  So if this is a small block and there are no pucks as described, nevermind.

The numbered account you are trying to access requires a 15 step identity verification procedure. We will begin with step 1.

What is the name of your great great great grandfather's favorite dog?

Step 2.

Divide the serial number on the back of your Rolex Submariner Date by 6 and provide the result.

Oh, you don't own one? Most unfortunate, we are terminating the call now.
