Not that we need to, but what if we did? What if we could have only one mechanized mistress of mobility?

Would you choose four wheels, three wheels, two wheels, or (for you clowns) one wheel? If two wheels, would you choose a motorcycle, scooter, or bicycle?

My feelings change from day to day, but today, with the rain, and seeing my two "grandchildren," er, chocolate labs, I would have to choose four wheels so they could travel with me. However, when the sun is shining and I am feeling independent, definitely two wheels. In that case, I would probably choose my Vespa. I need to travel long distances, so a bicycle would not be very convenient. Plus, it requires effort.

My Vespa, on the other hand, is tremendous fun, and it makes me smile, every time!

If I HAD to choose,it would have to be a four wheeled vehicle. Too many variables including weather in Kansas,job,and home maintenance. <shrug>.

2 wheels , but now in semi retirement , don't have to get out much in bad weather .

Cars/trucks are appliances to me. A conveyance to enhance convenience and productivity. They are very useful, but they just don't tug at my heartstrings like motorcycles and bicycles. However, a four-wheeler's utility is a necessity in this modern world. I couldn't keep the farm going without my truck...

Yep, 4WD truck. For my uses includes a diesel engine and some towing capacity.

Range Rover Sport (4x4) with a super strong Versahaul on the back for the Guzzi, a bike rack on top for the Road and Mountain bike and the unicycles inside.

If I absolutely HAD to pick one vehicle forever, I'd split the difference, go with three, and buy myself a Ural Gear-up.

Out of all the four-wheel vehicles we have owned (including many BMWs, a Jaguar, an Audi, a Mercedes, a Land Rover, etc.), the one truly useful type has been a four-wheel drive, full-sized, crew-cab pickup truck. If the zombie apocalypse were to come and my wife and I could have only one vehicle between us, it would be her Chevy Silverado (or something similar, along with some shot guns!).

We have stuff to haul, and not just on paved roads, and not just in nice, dry weather.

First of all you did not state what circumstances dictate that you can only have one. This makes a huge factor in which one you choose. Has civilization gone gunnybag and so roads have deteriorated to shite and gas is scarce and godaweful expensive? Have laws been passed that only allow one? Is all normal except your own finances have gone gunnybag? All of these factors could be major influences on choice.

If it was just me that I needed to transport and I lived alone and somewhere where it didn't get cold or rain much then it'd be a bike but reality (job, Wife, 4 kids etc.) dictates I need a car...

Like most people, I'd have to pick 4 wheels. But I really miss the days when all I had was a bike. That's still possible in England but not here in interior BC.

Absolutely 4 wheel and I'll tell you which one in particular too...

1997-2001 Jeep Cherokee - not Grand either. 4 door only please.

I've had to much fun with them.

Stiffen them up and they corner like slot cars.
"Big Block" the six or add a huffer to it for power.
Lift it or lower it - both directions are fun.
Build a "jeep-speed" racer and play low budget Baja hero.
Comfortable to drive, sporty as you want, tows and pushes real well, strong rain gutters for top loads, used all over the world and can be fairly easily dieseled.

Made that choice a few years ago: Two wheels only.

For nasty weather & grocery/hardware etc trips I use the Victory Cross Country Tour

For all other riding it's a choice: '13 Griso, '01 Jackal, '89 Mille

One vehicle? It would have four wheels, four wheel drive, and a V8 engine! My Suburban serves me well.

If two wheels, it would be a motorcycle. Something versatile and economical, with a long range. My V7 Special serves well in that regard, but a Stelvio probably would, too.

I admire those who have been able to do that!

I have been thinking about going cage-free--sort of. I would still need my wife or son to drive me occasionally when the roads turn icy, or let me borrow their rig for the day (both are four-wheel drives). So, that would be cheating, I suppose.

Years ago, I knew some bankers who lived and worked in New York City. They did just fine getting around by public transportation or taxi. Out here in the country, however, we do not really have much in the way of public transportation, so I would need four wheels when the weather turns dangerously bad. (I do not mind riding in the wind and rain, but I mind riding in snow and ice.)

I don't live in the country and I don't own a farm so I would choose my bicycle. I lived for two years with just my bicycle. I only use a car to transport my old mom (86 and too old and feeble for a motorcycle ride) and to tow/launch my boat. But if I had to I would sell my boat and keep my bicycle. I enjoy my motorcycle because I takes me on what I consider to be very long and amazing "bicycle" rides. But if I could only have one vehicle it would be my bicycle, a 1973 Peugeot.
