If you've got the time...
« on: May 17, 2016, 09:54:27 PM »
I could use a little advice. I am toying with the idea of looking into this:
https://madison.craigslist.org/mcy/5584400732.html
I am trying to not be too impulsive.
What would be the smart questions? What would be the concerns or issues to look out for? Any non-starters?
I sure would appreciate a little help.
Thanks

Looks decent!  But for a bit more and a little further drive out to Iowa, I think this is a better buy.

The '96 is local to you. You can easily go see it and hear it. Nice aftermarket seat (stock seat was not a well loved item) bags and windshield.  96 will have tube type tires. Nice bike. It may have an ignition system that some folks do not care for : digiplex. Search threads on that topic. The newer EV has tubeless tires, but no bags. Bags will set you back a little, unless you already have some. The EV is a more updated similiar version of the 96.    The SP II is a good little bike, with more sporting (some say cramped) ergonomics. It has no floorboards, stubby little foot controls,  but the fairing is one of the best in all Guzzidom. Good luck and let us know how you fare.

I'm more of a sporty type guy, and that SP looks like it could be a good one to save.  :thumb:

I emailed the owner.  I am a sucker for a late model EV, but am going to take a pass as I decided to get a Norge.   This is a nice one!  I will PM his contact information

Is it a problem when you can see only the advantages of all the options?
Of big appeal to me is the floorboards. On my current Breva, the ergonomics put my legs in the perfect position to cause problems in my left leg. I am pretty sure I can avoid it with the floorboards. I think the SP would put me right back in that position.
Is it unreasonable to buy a motorcycle in order to get a fairing?
The upgrades on the 1100i are a big positive, but I probably need to find out whether it is carbureted or EFI, digiplexed, or tubeless. All of which seem to be controversial here on the forum.
The EV sure is pretty, nice low miles, and appears to have been loved. Also it has all of the modern conveniences. Good thing? How do I access PMs?
I might be fooling myself, but Dusty always makes me safe here on the forum. He'd never mess with us, would he?

How do I access PMs?

At the top of the page you should see "My Messages".  Click on it and the message will appear.

To save the effort I will add the owners email below

Hi, David,

I attached a couple more photos for you.  I love Guzzi's too.  This is my second one.  The bike is in great shape.  No accidents, never even laid down.  I'm only selling because I'm moving and buying a house otherwise I'd keep it.  I'm looking to sell it as soon as possible.  Let me know how interested you are.

Tim

Give me a call if you want to.

Fuzzy, there is one thing that needs to be confirmed  regarding the 2004 before whole heartily recommending.  You would need to confirm with the owner that it has the dual plate clutch (good) vs. the single plate clutch (bad).  I can't remember if 2004's still had the prone to early failure single plate.  If the owner is not sure there is an easy way to confirm by popping the rubber inspection cover on bell housing.  This concern does not exist for the 1996.

A dual plate clutch will look like this.  If so, all is good!

A single plate clutch like this.  A big discount in price is in order to offset the cost of upgrade to a dual, or walk away.

I thought this was going to be about beer from the thread title...

The SPII has wonky switch gear and that killer 16" front wheel.
I'd be all over that puppy...wait...I already have one.

Wow, SPII for sale and at a very reasonable price too. I can't say I've ever seen an SPII for sale in the 2 years I've been digging around looking at CL and eBay ads. Someone go for it. If I didn't already have a metallic gray bike I'd go for it (yea, I'm that shallow... :cheesy:)

As for the OP's questions.. looks like a good deal to me for that 1996 Cali 1100, nice accessories too which really add-up making the bike alone an even a better deal if those are items that you intend to get anyway. Good luck.

Looks as if someone beat (or is going to beat) me to the '76.
The EV still has a single clutch plate, so I am a little reluctant to get involved at that price, although it is pretty. And low miles.
Looking at the SP2 makes me hurt, but y'alls responses are making me think twice.
There is a Jackal in Northern Illinois that I got beat to, and a 2003 Stone in central Illinois that is naked, but low miles and reasonable pricewise.
It's almost 5, I've got to make my head stop spinning. See? This thread ultimately is about beer...

Fuzzy PM me with your email, or here if you want.  I will forward info about a very nice 2001 EV that will make matters more confusing!  Sorry to hear the 2004 had the single plate, but good to know.

Single plate clutches are not a concern with 2001's. Only 6350 miles.
