Foam bits inside B1100 air filter
«

I was checking for excessive oil inside air filter housing and it was good. However there were some ripped blue foam bits that were inside the air filter. I hope nothing got sucked into the throttle bodies. The pieces were ripped off from the foam above the air filter on the air box lid. I saw no sign of critters. The foam feels dry. Maybe it is brittle. Any thoughts on preventing this from happening again? Has anyone heard of defective foam?

Well, there ya go. Another foam story. I recently had a foam disintegration problem too.

If you use foam filters, inspect them often.

If it was just sitting inside the air filter then there should be no way for it to be sucked further into the airbox and then into the throttle bodies.
Where did the foam come from?
My 1200 Sport came equipped with some loose pieces of foam in the air filter well from new. I think when they trimmed the foam under the tank somewhere they just dropped it in there as it was convenient, I know others have reported the same thing.

The foam came from directly above the filter element on the lid to the air box. The lid has the blue foam adhered or at least stuck to the lid. I did not try to disturb it.
The pieces were found sitting in the center of the filter element, resting on the bottom of the air box. It was late at the time, so my recollection was flawed. I looked at the parts diagram and the pieces should not cause a problem. They were probably swirling around inside for some time.
