Brake Shoes.

Maybe I am not looking hard enough but it seems this type of brake shoe is not available.

I am sure this is the stock front end (March 1973 build tag) on the Eldorado, it has the backing plate with circlip pivots and the full end shoe.
Is this what the Ambassador had ?

I see the same type in pictures on the  'This old Tractor website so it can't be my imagination.

I got these shoes but they are for the 4LS so going cheap if some one wants them.
Original at the back.

Cam Shaft Lifters and other things.

I finally found a decent camshaft a while back and need new lifters.
Eldorado lifters seem to be non available on all the usual websites not that there is a hurry based on progress to date.
One of the original push rods had been rubbing on the head and had quite a lot of wear, I got another good set of four.
I had also got a later (excellent condition) set of rockers (complete) long ago when I was going to get the Gilardoni 950 kit but ended up getting the 850 kit.

Later lifters are available but they use a different/ larger ball end push rod ?
Would there be any point or problem using those later rockers (wider spacing at the push rod ?) on a stock bore Eldorado ? (The stock rockers in the bike also showed enough wear to need replacing so either way I need replacement rockers)

#

Transmission Bearings.

I had no luck finding transmission bearings here in Australia (complete set) so the only route now seems to be those on the HMB Guzzi website.
Is there a consensus that that double row 9 ball bearing is good long term (or any term)

#

Clutch Plates.

I read the post about broken/fractured clutch plates, I think I got those plates as replacements so guess I need to buy another pair.
I should have asked first to what might be the best for the Eldorado, bit late now but only want to do this once.

Any opinions appreciated.

Les, do you belong to the yahoo group Loopframe Guzzi?  If not you should join.  I am sure it will get sorted out quickly there.

Yes early 1973 Eldorado had the same front end and brake as Ambassador and earlier Eldos...

I've run across some backing plates like yours with non-removable posts with circlips. The best course of action (IMO) for shoes in that case is to have them relined. If you can't find anyone local to you that can do them, I can have them done for you. Or source a good used "normal" backing plate with pivots and use the more common shoes. I have had fitment issues with the reproduction shoes, so still prefer to have originals relined.

Delta Camshaft in Tacoma, WA can reface the original lifters for ~ $3 ea. If you use the later lifters, you'll also need to use the later pushrods and adjuster screws. I don't think it'll matter which rockers you use, but do check clearances during assembly. Most fully equipped automotive machine shops have a means of refacing the rocker tips as well, maybe check around to see if any local shops can do them.

Contact Pete Roper about the transmission bearings.

Being away from home a month at a time doesn't help progress but a package had arrived from HBM GUZZI when I got back (Along with a set of Norton 750 cases from the USA and a Sunbeam S7 Deluxe transmission case from the UK)
A set of push rods arrived a day or so later from the USA.

I got the later lifters so that should take care of the valve train from valves to the camshaft.
A complete set of bearings should have the transmission under control excepting any shims needed.
A new nut for final drive pinion was in the package so that completes the parts needed for that unit, only thing saved was the alloy housing, alloy bearing flange and pinion bearing housing.

Thanks for the offer on the brake shoes Charlie, I  had contacted an AU based business that does vintage cars but no reply to date but I can see the shoes going to the USA one way or another.

Dave, I had seen the Loop list long ago but it looked exclusive, I will look at joining.

So far I have purchased parts off MG Cycle (7 orders)  Stein-Dinse (1 order) HMB Guzzi (2 orders) and Harper's Moto Guzzi (1 order) over a 4 year period.
I did find this company and will get the crankshaft balanced https://www.facebook.com/Hi-Tech-Dynamic-Engine-Balancing-533355043363519/

I fly back to work tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the replies.  :thumb:

The Loop Group is far from "exclusive" - just the opposite, everyone is welcome as long as they have an interest in Loopframe Guzzis. I'm the moderator.

If you have to send shoes to the USA, perhaps you can get an exchange going to save some time -- someone cross-ship you relined ones in return for your cores and a fee.

Just a thought

What I've done is look up a local industrial brake/clutch place and have the drum surface trued and a set of shoes built to match the new surface. Really good brakes after this. Of course you'll need the old shoes so they can be relined. Hope this helps.

I put two wanted threads up a while back and Dick was quick to help me out on the first one.

http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=84895.0

I want to say thanks in public not only for the part being in great shape but for taking the time and effort to post it to Australia.

The same for Charlie Mullendore who sent me a great set of connecting rods.

Another package arrived from Germany also while I was away at work and it included a new oil pump.
That should be all the parts needed for the engine.

Hi Les , contact Mario from thunderbikes in Perth, he has most mechanical parts for loops and has helped me with most parts I have needed   such as full engine gearbox and final drive rebuild  items . I have recently re raced my eldo diff to a higher ratio and he had the full range of crown wheels and pinions to choose from and also replaced my chrome bores on my V7 sport and he had Gilardonis sitting on the shelf to suit, I would be surprised if he cant help you and as for gear box or final drive  bearings most reputable bearing supplies can supply all your bearings except the two 10-2762  in the gear box and I know Mario  has them in stock as he supplied me a set two days ago for a job im doing for a mate.  cheers Bill

Hi Bill
Thanks for the reply, I didn't know of that shop but pretty much have all the parts needed now.
Fly back to work tomorrow but got to spend a little time on the transmission starting with removal of the old bearings and prepping the castings.

Nice choice of bikes there, I had a 78 CBX for over seven years from 1983 on.
