Catalitic converter....

Hello all:

  Reading another post, and I came up with this question,

  On my B1100, I have a cat con.  What would be the repercussions of the removal of it ?
  Not interested in, it won't pass inspection etc, just more a state of tune.....
  I have no intention of removing it, since the machine runs quite fine, thankyouverymuch.
  Just curious....

The engine was designed to run WITH it, not WITHOUT it...you do the math...

Plus, it removes harmful compounds from the exhaust stream before it reaches the atmosphere, making breathing a little easier for all of us.

There are quite likely at least TWENTY other things you could do to improve the performance of your engine...do the research!

Back in 78 ,79 my dad used to remove the catalytic converter on his cars when he brought them home from the dealer, replaced with a "test pipe" that you could buy from JC whitney I think. There was no emissions testing in rural Arizona , and my dad claimed his 78  Ford Granada's straight 6 ran better without it. Back then you had the choice between leaded and unleaded gas, and I remember my dad having a little "adapter" for filling the gas he would use.  My dad also liked to travel down into Mexico with the Granada,for vacations, and all the "Pemex" gas sold there contained lead,at that time.My how times have changed..... That old Granada did run for almost 300K miles with the converter still stashed away in the garage rafters, since new!

I replaced my convertor with a pipe made by Mistral, way cooler exhaust temperature and no indication of any running problems since, was not cheap though! DonG

On my B1100 the first thing I removed was the cat. Replaced said cat with a Mistral crossover and experienced cooler running temps, cooler feet and lost about 10 pounds as a bonus. Now after about 5k miles without the cat the B1100 is still running strong and I see not ill coming from it.

As to the bad air it produces, well, let us tend to the methane/cow issue.  :laugh:

Beyond tree hugging and being able to breathe the air in town again the best thing about the catalyst is that when I get where I'm going I don't stink of exhaust! The gas nowadays has so much stinky crap in it that only the white hot fury of the converter can tame it. I like that feature. So do the people around me after I ride my Norge.
