Road trip. Adirondacks maybe ?
« on: May 30, 2016, 07:09:53 PM »
My daughter has a break coming up in early June and wants to take a road trip. No clue as to where we are going yet but I am considering heading west to the Adirondack region. Any one have any advice? We have never explored that area. TIA  dave

I live and work in the Adirondack Mountains, where will you come from? Our area is heavy with plenty to do and see from Olympic History and attractions to hiking and gorgeous scenery to the Amercade Motorcycle Touring Rally just south of the Adirondack Park in June (google it), not to mention good to great accommodations, camping and don't forget great motorcycle roads. What's your fancy? Interests? Time available? I'll help if I can. Stay safe, John

The Americade touring rally is June 7 - 15 in Lake George, NY; approximately 50,000 motorcycles in a bucolic setting around the beautiful lake, right at the edge of the great Adorondack Park. I've been going for about 20 years -- if you can make at least part of this event, you'll be glad you did. Aside from the rally, the Adirondacks offer some of the best summer riding around: good roads with bucolic scenery and almost no traffic.

Watch out for beavers crossing the road if there's water on both sides of the road.

I'll defer to John, ADK, but I have ridden most all the paved roads in the park and a few of the gravel ones. Let us know if you want to see specific sites or more into uncluttered roads. For curvy roads RT 10 and the road along the north side of Sacandaga Lake between Lake Luzerne and Northville are the best. RT 8 and the western part of RT 3 to Tupper Lake has the least traffic. The eastern part around Lake Placid and also RT 28 through Old Forge is the most touristy. The ride will be slower but there are also many interesting stops to check out. Plan 3-4 days depending on how many stops you want to make and what you want to do. More if you want to any fishing or hiking.

Forget Americade.  Head further west and go to the GUZZI  rally in Westfield NY, June 9-12th.

Thanks John, We will be leaving from southern Maine. Just looking at a map I am curios about rt 2 that runs up through the middle of lake Champlain. Will probably be passing through Burlington Vt. and head west from there.

I've always enjoyed #2 through the.Champlain Islands both by bicycle and bike.
Lot of nice paths through the Adirondack area. Good camping too.
You have a pretty area to explore.

I avoid the crowds. If I wanted to be surrounded I'd ride in Boston.
Nothing like a smooth empty road through the windscreen and in the rearview.

Enjoy!

Speaking of which....

I am thinking about a trip to Maine/Vermont/New York, later this month. Is the Lake Champlain ferry at Cumberland Head a hassle to get to/from the island, or should I try to ride around it?

I've taken all the Champlain ferries. None of them is a particular hassle. In fact, they are a pleasant interlude to the ride.

Your choice on crossing Champlain, just about the same amount of time bridge or boat. Good views either way, although the ferry will give you father/daughter time moving with a view. Warning: if a storm is brewing ride around, I've been on the ferry in 5' waves (in a car) feet mashed on the brakes the whole time thinking this would not work on a bike!

I'm in the Adk's as well, try 9N down both Lake Champlain and Lake George are very nice. Plenty of of historic Forts and markers on the way if that's of any interest.
