Norge Weird random starting issue
« on: June 02, 2016, 12:00:00 PM »
Apparently an open circuit at the switch where the wiring harness enters the housing. Looks like removing the switch is the next step. I'll be busy for a while. Any advice from y'all would be appreciated.

Randy

2007 Norge has been basicly trouble free for 87,000+ miles. But yesterday the bike wouldn't start. No parking lights, until I rotate the handle bar to the far left stop. Bike starts all is good until I move the steering to center position. Bike keeps running but headlights turn off. No re-start in the center position.  Apparently a wiring issue.............. .....Before pulling stuff apart, looking for possible ideas.

Does the dash light up? If so clutch switch. If not? Ignition switch.

If the wires are flexing where they go into the ignition switch chances are one of them is broken.
I'm not sure about the Norge but earlier Guzzis it was just a matter of unscrewing the switch block, 2 Phillips screws around the back to get the block off.
Re-solder the wire on and fix them to the housing so the movement is taken up by a gentle twisting over several inches away from the soldered joint. At a solder connection is the first place a wire will break.

Disclaimer - as I said this is not a Norge switch, it's off a VII

This is timely. From time to time I get a no start, that is, a single clunk and then nothing. Second or third try is always successful. But one of these days, ..........

Apparently the ignition switch has a broken internal wire, on to the next step....micro-surgery and with big hands a major challenge.......... .....

The wiring is very close to the photo from Kiwi Roy, I'll photo the Norge failure for the site.

Randy

I added a short pig tail to the broken wire and re-installed the cover & zip tied the harness to complete the assembly. a test to confirm and I'M back on the road and heading to the Minnesota Rally later this month......

That's great, as I said before make sure the wires are fastened where they come out of the switch cover so there's no bending going on at the solder joint.
Just a gentle twisting over several inches. The first place a wire will break is at the soldered joint, the copper work hardens and gets brittle.

I saw the same thing on a friend's V11S. Must be a common issue..
