oil pan long bolts

Greetings everyone!

While dropping the pan to change the oil filter one of the long bolts snapped.

Was able to get the snapped portion out.

Should I use a stainless bolt for replacement or another type?

Guzzi....92000 miles and she snaps a bolt....sheesh.
Shouldn't  that be covered under warranty????

Yeah, go to tru value and have them replace the bolt under warranty.  I think there's a $4 prorated fee.   

You just snapped a bolt that's supposed to have 7 lb/ft of torque.  I'd replace it with a good grade steel bolt that can actually take 7 lb/ft of torque.

For that application I would want the exact bolt not something close.

I did the same thing, but it snapped when I was removing it (yes, I use a torque wrench on them).  And mine happened at 80k miles.

Since I needed the bike right away I went to a bolt shop to get the replacement.  Getting a 6mm bolt that long is tough to find, they aren't at the local Ace hardware (note: the T5 has the sump extension so the bolts are even longer).

Then I ordered the right ones and replaced them at the next service.  The 'hardware store' bolts didn't cause any issues, even though they were fully threaded, not just on the ends like the proper bolts.  They held the toqrue just fine and no leaks.

A little dab of never seize is a good idea.

The bolt snapped as I was removing it. Yes I use anti-sieze on these bolts but sometimes things just break.

Orchard Supply had the exact bolt, which was a pleasant surprise. I have found they carry a lot of metric hardware that matches.

Sump is back on and she is ready to ride again.
