Stable & an Outsider - "Bike Bubbles" Feasibility?
« on: June 21, 2016, 06:03:00 AM »
Has anyone dealt w/ issue of mine that has come to a head.  No way I can fit all the bikes in the two-car garage anymore.  So after I added the two service platforms in it, I have stored the leftover/outsider (CalVin w/ sidecar) in a rental unit a couple of miles away (ESS).  If I was able to keep the outsider on the side of my own garage year-round oh man that would be so much better.  But this is central Ohio.  What about these "bike bubbles" that I've read about but not ever seen in practice??  It would need to cover the sidecar as well.

The pic shows badly unless clicked into it, FYI.

This link (Carcoon size #3) is what I'm about to pull the trigger on.

http://www.carcoonusa.com/#!store/c5u1

So it's about 1-year ROI vs. ESS rental garage costs (a mile or two out of the house).

I'd prefer to keep the stuff under my own watch.

But . . .  Experiences on this Carcoon thing for outdoors use?  Anyone?

Welcome, [Gooze853].

I don't have an answer to your problem, but it's a nice problem to have...

If not vented really well I can see a lot of moisture build up inside one of those.

Would not put it where a tree might drop a limb.

Would want to talk to people who have had them set up for a few years to see how quickly the sun eats the plastic.

Why not just tear out the shrubs, lay pavers and build a lean-to using the same siding?

Welcome, [Gooze853].

I don't have an answer to your problem, but it's a nice problem to have...

. . .  I sometimes forget that for the human kind, it used to be about access to food, getting fed and survival to have yet another day.  But I'm appreciative of how everything has worked out in the modern world.

We're truly the fortunate ones when I get to "worry" about these things, but . . .  this is kind of important!  The sidecar rig was an anniversary gift for my wife, and I can as well keep in my own property.

She'd like it too that way!

Two Checks suggestion of a metal shed is by far the best choice. They're relatively inexpensive and offer the best protection from the weather, as well as being lockable. And if you find you don't need it in the future it's easy to sell. I'll be buying one in the next few weeks for myself. Not for the bikes but for my riding lawn mower and other yard tools.

I would go with a small wood shed vs metal....metal sweats and moisture drops down on the bike...especially in humid areas...

I see more metal sheds collapsed under snow loads than I do wood sheds up here in Massachusetts.

I'd really like to help. You can keep one or two of the bikes at my place. I'll even see that they don't go "stale".
PM if interested.

Have any Ammish in the area? I'd use one of their small wood sheds/barns. Looks much better then a rusty old metal shed.

That's the problem with sidecars, they take up too much room.

A plastic bubble or a metal shed would look like shite next to that house.

Why not build a shed that matches the house?  A Lean-to would work, and it doesn't even have to attach to the house.  It can be butted up to the house without having to attach

Or, buy a free standing shed at Lowe's / Home Depot and paint it to match the house?

Another problem with soft sided shelters is that they're not rodent proof.  You definitely don't want beasties taking up residence in your bike over the winter, they will total your wiring.

Years ago I had a work colleague that had an H-D with lots of chrome in the Worcester, MA area. He hated that the chrome would rust over the winter from the moisture in the garage.

He got some kind of bubble that came with a desiccant to prevent moisture from developing inside. It was just like the little desiccant packs you get with some consumer items but like the size of a bag of flour. You could re-dry it every year by putting it in the oven.

I haven't talked to him in years so not sure how well it worked.

Not sure how something like that would hold up outside.

If you can't do a small shed because of your hoa, those cycle shelter brand deals are nice.

Check out shedsdirect.com. ten years ago I bought a 12 x 17 vinyl coverd shed with garage style door for $1300 delivered. Put it on a 14 x 21 concrete pad and it works great. Holds both bikes, a fridge, roll around tool box, mower, shelving units and more. And it looks good.

Is there a CAR in that garage? If so, get it out of there. Problem solved. No thanks needed.

Thanks for all replies.  I'll weigh my options for a while and go from there.  I'll drop a line when I pull the trigger one way or another (read: soon).  Homeowners' association stuff's all good as my neighbor is the president, and he's OK in whichever way I go.

BTW, I haven't used my garage for cars in 15 years . . .  and I have lived here for 17 years.  The bikes took over.  A couple of things happened that pushed it too far.  I added the service platforms & added the sidecar => too much.

But all for good reasons.  The platforms I need due to my messed-up shoulder.  And the sidecar rig I "packaged" as a gift to my wife.
