Viper screen on Griso

Flimsy?  Check.  Cheap?  Check.  Effective?  Not bad for the money. 

Just posting this here for anyone interested.  Finding an effective screen that doesn't look totally and completely fugly on the G is always a struggle for me.  The Slipstreamer Spitfire was too flimsy, not effective, and it looked terrible.  The Dart Marlin and the Givi A210 were sharp looking but I wanted more coverage.  I would never in a million years have thought to try this screen as I think it looks terrible on most bikes but to my eyes it somehow works for me here and it provides more coverage than the other two.

What size handlebar clamps are you using.  Generally the 1 inch clamp is too small and the 1 and 1/4 too large.  That is the problem I have found with most aftermarket windscreens.  They don't make handlebar clamps that will fit the Griso.

I use the 1 1/4 but must also use the rubber spacers to bring it down to fit the G's bars.  I'm not sure why Slipstreamer sells these spacers with some screens and not others.  They came with the former Spitfire I had but they didn't come with the Viper here pictured.

Yes, but I have it raised slightly to give me just a an inch or two more coverage up top.

Do you know how it performs at high speed, against the wind? I saw complaints that it can be unstable because it only mounts at two points. What is your experience? (The one I have has four-point mounting.)

I also think it looks good on the Griso and bad on other bikes, at least as posted on the internet. Good choice, if it's stable.

As stated, per the looks I never would have tried it on the G given how crappy I think it looks on other rides, but last week I saw it on this Griso posted on ebay, emailed the seller, and he gave a good report on it so I bit.

As per performance, some things to consider.  This is a very cheap screen.  Keep that in mind.  It's not a four point, handlebar and fork mounted screen that doesn't budge.  Even still, I'm not sure what other folks mean by "unstable".  Does it flap slightly at 90?  Yup.  Is it in any danger remotely of coming off?  Not that I can tell.  I've owned several Slipstreamer brand screens before and while they are flimsy and usually require you to retighten them occasionally, I find they stay put so long as you keep them tightened down. 

I haven't yet done more than about 50 miles with this Viper but it was at speeds mostly of 75-90.  At those speeds it did what I wanted, offering me more coverage than the sharper and better made Dart Marlin and Givi versions.  It's wider at the top than those and more effective in that way.  Is it a barndoor? Nah, you still get some wind and noise but it's not bad so far that I can tell. 

I love the look and quality of the Dart Marlin.  And the Givi A210 I had was sharp too though I've generally found Givi to have some of the worst customer support/communication I've ever experienced.  Even said, neither of those screens seemed to make much difference at all at highway speeds - at least for me.  In fact, I preferred just going totally nekid than having those for highway work.  In contrast, this one certainly does offer some benefits at those same speeds.

My love affair with the MRA screen is fading fast. Too much wind noise about the helmet and it likes to lay down, especially when you 90 or when a semi goes by (it only happened once, but on 318 one went by with a massive shockwave and it laid the screen flat.

It only mounts to the handlebars so something that also mounts to the forks, triple tree or headlight is needed. I have a Slipstreamer for the CB1100 and the mounting system is very cheap. The fork mount part was  unusable so I fabbed up a brace that uses the tube pinch bolts. Not sure it will ever be used again as I have a Comet 1 on the CB now and she is sweet. Come winter my tune may change. 

The parabellum Scout may be the ticket, but that is a lot of money.

Thanks for the additional information and photos. I think I might try a Viper.

A question: The dimensions given on the website are 17.25" high and 22.25" wide. I think those are heights measured from the headlight cutout, and side-to-side as a string stretched across the back (clear of the shield) would measure (i.e., a chord, in the geometric sense). Right?

I noticed on the web that some owners have drilled holes in the bottom corners of this shield and then used zip ties to attach the corners near the headlight. If I had this shield I think I would drill and grommet the holes ahead of time, to be ready to secure the corners in a really bad wind. I might use cords instead of zip ties.

As I mentioned, I stow a National Street Shield EX tucked into my tailpack when going on long camping trips. You can see the stowed setup in profile and from the rear in the first two photos, and the deployed Street Shield (over the flyscreen) in the third photo, taken in Wyoming:




The Sport Shield is 18 inches high (from the cutout), by 19 wide (chord), so a 22-inch wide Viper would be harder to get under the top flap on the pack. That flap is a little more than 23 inches long, and the width measurement along the curved face of the windshield would be longer than that. Could you tell me how long that measurement is?

A big stowage advantage of the Viper is the attachment system, which can be unscrewed from the windshield. The Sport Shield's system (lower right) involves ball joint sockets that are glued to the screen, so the only way of removing the hardware is to dislocate the ball joints forcibly. I think that doing that might loosen them up too much, so I have usually left them connected, and secured the arms with cord in case they pop out on the road (as is visible in the top right photo). Assuming I can finagle the rigging, the Viper would be less of a bother. And I think it looks better.

Hey Moto, very sharp setup and ride you have there.  I'll try and get some measurements posted on here by tomorrow morning.  The idea about the zip ties is a good one and I'll certainly try as that portion near the headlight is what wiggles the most.

It doesn't matter a toss if WE think it's as ugly as a hat full of farty arseholes! If it makes your ride, (As opposed to your 'Coffee Shop Pose'.) better? Then WGAF?
