Home at last!

At last!  I get to sleep in my own bed ...... the first time since May 10th, except for a couple of false starts.

I had an aortic valve replaced on May 10th, and thought I was through the major part of initial recovery after the first 7-8 days.  Not to be. After a false start or two, I ended up back in the hospital with staph infection and something that caused weakness of right leg and arm.  Scary, to say the least.

The cure?  One very monotonous prescription of Oxycillin ....... an intravenous drip 6 times a day, 7 days a week, for 6 weeks.  So I ended up in a rehab facility, since there was no way I could the perform the intravenous procedure every 4 hours.  That is the normal protocol to assure staph has been killed off.

That ended today, thank God!  I met with the doc who had been monitoring weekly blood tests.  He gave me a clean bill of health (re the staph infection) which meant I was free of the ball and chain of the drip bag.

Not sure right leg and arm are quite ready for two wheeling.  I think the prudent thing is to give it a rest for a few more weeks.

My son is visiting with me for 4-5 days, just to make sure the old man doesn't do anything really dumb (I'm prone to do that)

I did take the opportunity to spend some time behind the wheel of my Mazda6, and it all felt super good.  I'd been cleared to drive, but hoped it felt normal.  It did.

Enough of my update.

I'd like to take this time to thank all of my Guzzi friends who stayed in touch with me during my time in the hospital and rehab facility.  I appreciated every single email, phone call, and the personal visits by members of our breakfast group.  Great to talk bikes with you when you visited, in emails, and phone conversations. Better yet was the feeling of still being part of the wonderful group of Guzzi cyclists while being laid up.

Thanks all.  I hope to catch up with you at the July breakfast, though I may be on 4 wheels instead of two for a while.

Ohio have you had a neurological work up referencer the right sided weakness? If this weakness is lingering I would ask for an evaluation via CT and or MRI. Did you mention this to your doc.?I am not trying to scare you but docs miss this all the time. Between my and I we have 70 years experience in neurological rehab and have seen a lot. You have been through the mill and I must say you have been fortunate fighting off that infection. But you mention the weakness a couple of times and that it is lingering makes it a red flag. Not a grim reaper flag but something to bring up with your doc.
