direct power to second coil?
« on: July 06, 2016, 02:32:25 PM »
Hi all,

I'm in the process of installing a Dyna III on my 1976 T3 and in following the install directions I noticed an apparent oddity in terms of how my coils are wired. The positive terminal on the second coil is, as it is supposed to be, connected via a jump wire to the positive terminal from the first coil. But the second spade on the positive terminal of the second coil -- which, as per the Dyna III instructions, is supposed to be available -- had a wire, apparently added by the PO, running directly to the left-hand side of the fuse box. With the key on, that wire provides about 12 volts from the battery.

I'd be interested in hearing any thoughts on what the point of this modification was. Why run power directly but separately to both coils? Any implication for setting up the Dyna III?

Jason

Maybe the kill switch doesn't work, or thereabouts in the RH handlebar electrics, and left wires hooked up.

Since it's to switched power, I'd agree with guzzisteve that the killswitch failed. I considered it myself, or installing a relay to take the coil load out of the handlebar switch but I have new high-quality aftermarket switchgear I'm assuming is up to the task. So far it is.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

Thanks, that makes sense. Since I have installed new switchgear in the past few years, removing the extra source of power doesn't seem like it will cause me any problems.
