Dyna III rotor "wobble', advice?
« on: July 11, 2016, 09:47:38 AM »
I'm installing a Dyna III on my T3. I decided to try it myself. It is pretty straightforward, but I am having a bear of a time trying to get the rotor installed on the cam shaft so that it doesn't "wobble" too much as it spins around. I push the rotor down on the shaft, I hold it even, and then tighten the tiny set screws with the tiny 2mm allen wrench. But no matter how firmly I am holding the rotor so that it is centered on the shaft, when I tighten the first set screw it pulls the rotor to the side so that it "wobbles" quite a bit when rotated. It doesn't look like the rotor is actually rubbing the sensor plate, but it comes very, very close to doing so at certain points in the rotation.

Is there any particular trick to this part of the install?

I've been wrestling with this for a couple of hours, have already lost one 2mm allen wrench somewhere in the cooling fins,  and am ready to smash my head against the wall. Advice much appreciated.

Why are you nstalling the dyna?  what are you solving with it?  Is the dizzy out of the engine?  it's easier on the bench.  Also, is it the rotor or the shaft that's wobbly?

The dizzy is in the bike. The Dyna instructions call it "wobble" but it would be better maybe to call it the run-out of the rotor when it spins. The rotor is firmly attached via the set-screws, but if it is not centered on the shaft the gap between the rotor and the sensor  that is mounted to the distributer housing varies between wide and non-existent as the rotor spins around.

Maybe the dizzy/gears or shaft was already "shafted" before you added the dyna.
Sure you have all the old gasket off? Is the sensor plate on flat. Maybe a small very small pebble is under the plate. Anchor threads to dizzy solid and straight?
I dunno know.
Pull the dizzy out and see if the shaft is solid and all the rest is prim and proper. It should be pretty much a turn key operation.
I dunno again.

the rotor is pulled onto the high point of the cam by the set screws. You need to look at the points cam. see the high part? put the two set screws opposite the center of the high point of the cam. the rotor will only spin true when the rotor is pulled tight to the high point of the cam. Once you screw the set screws in, the rotor should be "centered" (not wobble).
