Gearbox removal - Part 2
« on: July 21, 2016, 08:55:37 AM »
I'm working on a 1999 California Sport.

OK, so I got the PITA bolt out and the gearbox is free.  Now, any suggestions on getting it out of the frame.  I'm pulling, lifting and turning but it won't clear the back end.

Any suggestions?

I followed the crabbing instructions but the rear end of the frame doesn't lift.

Battery tray still bolted to the top of the transmission? Swingarm still in? The lower frame rails are removable or swiveled below.
Is the front tire removed?

Yes, battery tray removed, swingarm removed, front tire in but the bike is on a lift and I read that was ok.  Where does the bottom part of the frame pivot from?  It looks as if the frame is all one piece.

lower frame rail bolts out at the rear and the front motor mount loose, it will pivot from the front motor mount bolt.

I had to remove the front wheel on mine to give it enough room to pivot.

There are two large Allen bolts on the front frame down tubes. These have to be removed and the bolt that goes through the timing chest loosened so the frame will pivot on the timing chest bolt.

OK, the trans is out.  It wasn't necessary to remove the tire, loosen the motor mount or do anything to the bolt through the timing chest.  I removed the bolts holding the chrome engine guard and the frame dropped.  This might be a different frame than the one you worked on.

Thanks for your suggestions.
