Sylvania LED 1157

The vibration on my rear fender was killing my incandescent aftermarket tail/brake light. Was informed I could buy LED replacement that just pops in. Better light, no vibration issue, I'm sold. They are not cheap, autoparts store had them for $20 a 2 pack.

This is exactly what I got.
Its a good thing there are 2 in the pack because they are fragile. When I started pushing it in the socket I didn't even bottom out and the plastic cracked. At this point I figured I would go on and see if it still worked. Darn thing bottoms out before the side pegs clear the slots. The contacts at the bottom were very tall and I had to grind them down to get the pegs to clear. Turns out the first bulb was ruined, brake lights wouldn't come on. Ground down the second one and a very nervous try I got it in. Everything works and is bright as can be. Not sure why they made them so fragile. Just look at it sternly and the plastic cracks. Hope it works out. I've spent $20 on worse.

I've been using these on all the bikes, and they've been trouble free.  It even has some radially mounted LEDs to illuminate the license plate.

Even worse, it is a white LED. Putting a white LED behind a red lens if usually (not always) a bad idea.

I have a pair on my Strada.  They work fine.  They are bright.

I just saw his light a bit ago. Looks plenty red to me when it lights up. I never previously complained about his brake light, but the tail light was crap.

A white LED is actually a BLUE LED. They then put a thick layer of phosphor over the LED. That reduces the blue, and converts some of it to red and green.  Thus it looks somewhat white. So when you put that behind a red lens, and you of course get the red light, you just threw away most of the blue and green light. Roughly two thirds of the light is thrown away when you use white behind a red lens.
But if you get a RED LED and put behind a red lens, most of the light is used. Usually.

(I have heard that some odd colored lenses and LEDS don't match up very well and they even block a lot of the red from a red LED.)
