My buddy Mel and his stunning Rosso Goose, and myself, on my red headed 1400T are leaving next Tues. for Sturgis. I've been three times, 96,97, and 2000 on a GL1200, and Mel has never been. It's been on my bucket list to ride a Guzzi there. What a perfect year to do the deed. The release of the MGX21 and a couple of Guzzi's best touring machines, and I talked work into two weeks off without pay equals=== We're heading to STURGIS!!! Can you tell I'm just a little giddy!!! This is going to be one hell of a ride!!!  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:    :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Tom,

Not "taken down".  It was merged into the other MGX thread.

Then we decided to go ahead and create a road test and review thread for the MGX.

I had a dream last night that I got to ride a MGX 21.  In the dream a friend pulled up and on one and  let me take it.  In the dream I was so excited, I was all set, but then couldn't find my helmet, then I lost the key, and the next thing I knew a tow truck was on the seen trying to take it away, because I couldn't get it started.

Well, What a day this turned out to be. We started out with a wonderful buffet breakfast that is served every day at the college. Our plans originally had us riding to Mt. Rushmore for the day, but we decided to ride through Sturgis so Mel could see the goings on. We were hanging out, bought a few things, and what rides by but a MGX-21 right down Main Street in Sturgis. Well plans changed in a hurry with a little help of my GPS I tracked down Guzzi's digs on Main Street in Sturgis. As we are just pulling in the demo ride area, who's walking down the sidewalk, but no other than Miguel Galluzzi the designer of the MGX-21 and most of Guzzi's current lineup. He invited us in and introduced most of the group of Guzzi Executives to us. Everyone was checking out our 1400's, loving them. Michael Lee ( Vehicle and Accessories Product Manager) talked with us for quite a while, with lot's of picture taking going on, when he came up with, we would like to do something special for you guys. He arranged a special demo ride of the MGX-21 led by led my himself and followed by Alessandro Bampa the Marketing Director for Guzzi. They took us on the demo route that is planned for the rally, which starts tomorrow. We had a great ride with a stop at the top of a canyon with great twisties. We chatted about the bikes, which both Mel & I liked very much, and then returned back to Guzzi's digs on Main Street. I urge anyone in the area of Sturgis to come and take a test ride on the new MGX-21 and most of Guzzi's new line up. We so appreciated the time that everyone took to make sure our trip to see the MGX-21 was awesome.

Wow Steve!  Looks to me like you hit the Jackpot yesterday getting a personal test ride and discussion with the MGX-21's designer.   Great pictures and a nice review of yours and Mel's experience.   You and Mel can regale us with all of the details when you return home.

How about a more detailed impression of the mgx? How it handles. The seating. The dash. The hard bags.

Fantastic opportunity you stumbled into. I'm envious.

More pics from Sturgis. Another great day doing test rides and checking out Sturgis as things are ramping up. I had two test rides on the MGX-21 today, the last being a very spirited one on one blast up and down the Canyon with Michael Lee (Vehicle and Accessories Product Manager for Moto Guzzi. After we were done with the test rides Mel & I had another nice chat with Miguel Galluzzi designer for Guzzi. What a great and personable gentleman he is. He loves to talk Guzzi with everyone and certainly has extreme passion for Moto Guzzi. In one of the pics he's talking with someone on the sidewalk. A few pics while we were in the downtown area and a few bikes that I especially liked. More to come tomorrow!!!

Steve, I personally prefer the aestetics of your and Mel's Cal Tourers to the Batman-esque MGX-21.  I'm sure others differ in opinion, but to me it looks cartoonish.  Love those red valve covers on the white one, and the red bike is a show-stopper!

Does the MGX have anything to offer in superior handling, comfort, ergos, etc to sway my opinion otherwise?

Probably not...  Since opinions are subjective...

Not necessary, I think you either want it or don't based on the look.  Just like the Griso when it first came out, there were plenty of haters and plenty of lovers.

I am firmly in the I love it, it is bad a$$ looking camp on this one.

Compared to what?  Like Mike says it means different things to different people.  Compared to the Eldorado 1400.  I'd probably say it wouldn't handle as well.  IIRC the MGX-21, Audace, California 1400 Custom and Touring use the same platform.  The Eldo has different wheel and tire sizes compared to the rest of the 1400 Class.

Have to modify and correct my last post.  MGX21 has a 21" front tire with 16" on the rear.  California's have the 18".  Audace and Eldo have 16" weenies.  If there is no change in the angle/rake of the steering neck, would seem that the front-end would flop.

So that would mean that the Audace and Eldo are the better handling of the 1400's.  This would be in hairpin mtn. roads.  All of the 1400's would be fine sweepers and straight lines.

While I don't really care for the fairing, there are a lot of things I do like about the mgx-21. It has some really beautiful Bodywork and bags. The handlebars are pretty cool. The dash looks very informative. I really like all the carbon fiber, even on the front wheel.

Personally I think any handling differences between them are going to be nominal. There are differences in rear wheel and tire size across the line from California Custom to the California El Dorado. There are three differences in front wheel tire combo. But overall I think there are advantages and disadvantages to all three front wheel options.

A 21 inch front wheel can lighten steering feel because of its narrow or section width. A 16 inch front can feel planted and stable in turns.

Under the Skin these are all the same bike so I really think it's going to come down to personal choice on Style. My current favorites are the Eldorado and the mgx-21. I don't really care for the touring.

I do wish there were some color options for the mgx-21.
