Lario Valve Lash

I finally got around to checking the valves on the new to me Lario
It never sounded unduly noisy, I was quite surprised to find this.
One of the tappet screws missing, sure enough I looked on the ground and there it was.
It has the double springs on it's tiny valves.

As I say the engine didn't sound alarming.

Would one of you Gents tell me what the tappet clearance is supposed to be on this bike.

Those double springs will take the heads off of those tiny valves.  :smiley: I'd put the Nevada progressively wound springs on it..

Do you think it's safe to just replace the springs or do I need to get valves as well?
It has 40,000 km on the oddometer but from the brakes (pulse) I wonder if it's not a lot higher.

Yes I was thinking of selling it but after spending some seat time Im not so sure.

Besides the screw that fell out the valves were more like 6 & 10, only one cover screw was stripped. an insert fixed that.

WOW, what a difference putting the tappet screw back and setting valves made.
Fixed a couple of stripped screws and finally got the speedo going.

Roy, I would ride it, but be *very* suspicious of *any* anomaly with the valve train. I would go no longer than 1000 miles without checking valve lash, now that you have set them correctly. (I'd probably only go 500 miles myself) If any are closing up, especially exhaust valves, do something before it is too late. The heads are really hard to come by, and beginning to get expensive.

You asked if you needed valve replacement, I'd say yes. The old Lario valves were C***. Stein-Dinse seems to have some ok valves for the Lario these days. Titled "Race Valves". Using the Nevada spring you will limit the RPM to the red line. Nothing may or may not happen, but you will hear valve float from the inlet valves as they are the heavier of the two. If you buy custom valves, the weight should not pass 28-30gr. The heavier, the earlier you will have valve float.

Like Chuck said, use the Neveda springs and top buttom retainer, to fit the springs, and check for 14mm cam lobes, if there, make sure it's healthy. Then she'll purr for a while. Still though, you will need to keep an eye on clearance like Chuck said  :bike-037:

Use 20w50/60 synth. oil made for flat tappet MC mills. Viscosity index above 150 but below 200. (Info from the German Lario Club)

Hi Ice Blue, yes I still have the Lario but I will probably move it on this summer.
It's  a silver one, original paint I think, Oddometer says 50,000 miles but I suspect it's probably much higher judging from the groves on the discs.
Unfortunately I know nothing of it's history, no idea if the valves have been changed.
BTW, my ancestors came from Holbec (hope I spelt it right), migrated to New Zealand on a sailing ship.

Roy, if it is original, you have the highest mileage stock Lario I know of. Mine had blown up twice (that I know of) before I got it at around 18000 miles.

Thanks for that - don't find those in a parts search at Stein-Dinse....have an email inquiry off to them....in the meantime, would you have their part number available for those valves.

Your reply seems to have been lost on my PC. You have likely found the valves by now på their numbers are:

27036081 intake
27036180 outlet

They are labled race valves.
Seems like good quality.
