850T Seat Mount
« on: August 01, 2016, 12:15:00 AM »

Currently the seat is held on with these two bolts. I hope this isn't correct. What should it look like?

And what is the bracket below for? A grab rail?

Looks like what I expect to see.  What do you think the right number should be?

The brackets (I call them tabs) are for the rear light bezel.  They had a shroud around the tail light that looked a lot like the headlight shroud on a '60s Murray bicycle.

Not really a T mount. I believe that is a Convert seat mount and maybe a G5?? The T mount is also a passenger grab handle that wraps around the back of seat. It's chrome plated and looks nicer.

Yes, and that would be the 1st Generation G5.

Since the bracket had a hole in the center that didn't have a corresponding hole in the fender I assumed it wasn't original. Does anyone have a pic of the correct T seat bracket?

Is there some reason someone would use a different seat bracket? Were they different in functionality?

Also is there no way to hold the seat up when accessing the battery?

I guess I don't understand. The tabs under the seat are for the taillight?

This drawing shows the T3 seat mount, IIRC the T one was the same or very similar. I think I have one off of an SP that looks like that laying around here somewhere.

Maybe someone wanted to get rid of the grab rail, so used the Convert/G5 mount.

There should be a prop rod on the underside of the seat, but many times it's been removed or has just fallen off.

The tabs on your present mount were for a plastic tail piece which covered the taillight.

Ah, that make more sense now. Well, it's doesn't answer why they did it but we may never know that.

So I need the T seat bracket and grab rail to go back to stock. I'll post a pic of the underside of the seat in case the seat pans were different between the T and later ones.

The T5 seat and grab rail are completely different than the T, T-3, T-4 and SP.

But do they all attach on the same way with the two bolts?

Here's the grab rail I have off of an SP.

As you can see, the T, T-3, T-4, SP rail/mount attaches to the frame at the very rear and to the two top shock bolts.

So you think that people go around taking pictures of seat mounts on old Guzzis?  :whip2:

Yes.

True, but when you go search for them they were all posted by me.  :violent1:

Is this a T or T5 seat pan? I suspect the way the front of the seat wraps around the tank it might be a T5 pan. I can't see where the seat stand would fit.

It's obviously been recovered. And it's quite comfy.

It's definitely not T5 (which was shared with SP II and Mille GT) - that had a plastic base which didn't hinge and is shaped completely different. Yours looks like a T (or other early Tonti) base to me. The prop rod (if there is one still) has likely been covered over. You might be able to see where it's supposed to be located in this photo:

Very cool. At least now I know where to look for the prop rod!

It looks like I've been confusing G5 with T5. I'll get all the nomenclature right one of these days! If I can name all the Tonti variations I'll be doing good.
