need help diagnosing Norge cooling fan
« on: August 04, 2016, 08:24:46 PM »
This weekend I am going to see if I can figure out why my cooling fan does not come on at 120C like it is supposed to. If I put power to the fan it comes on & all my fuses are good. I was going to check the connector under the tank but I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a relay or fan switch for it somewhere and how to test it.

I don't even see a fan on Carl's drawings.
The sensor would most likely be in the radiator or hoses.

Fan is #41 and temp sens is #40 on my drawing, power comes from B fuse 15A Power is yellow wire.

Schematic shows sensor directly connected to fan. It is different than the engine temp sensor.

Send me your email, I'll send a hi deff schematic

Haha I assumed it had an oil cooler
There still isn't one on Carls drawing, was it added in later years?

There is a cooling fan mounted behind the oil cooler, started in 2011 I believe. Mine has never come on, dealer says 'you haven't got it hot enough' I want to check it out but he says it's fine...

The cooling circuit on the 8V isn't thermostatically controlled. They are generally grossly over cooled.

If you want to find out if it's working pull the sender, (Pretty certain it will be in the tank of the rad.) and heat it up until it goes closed circuit. As long as it's getting power then the fan should operate. Have something handy to stick in the sender hole.

Chances are if it hasn't cut in then as your dealer suggests it simply hasn't got hot enough. None of the other 8V-1200's have fans, the fact the Norge does is purely as a fail-safe due to its enclosure in bodywork. Even so, given that not a lot of heat is produced at idle it may simply be that the fan isn't needed. Only time the fan cut in on my Cali was when we got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on a freeway near Philly on a day when it was 95*F in the shade! I was more worried about me or Jude 'Cutting out' rather than the fan cutting in!

Well, here in Las Vegas there are plenty of times I wish I had a fan on my older Norge. I may add a unit one of these days if I can find a suitable one.

I noticed it wasn't working while I was balancing the throttle bodies. It always used to come on when Guzzi diag showed the engine temp at 120C, now it doesn't. It has been a hot summer here and I have been just shutting it off if I get stuck at a light or train crossing for more than a couple minutes, but as you say there is always the chance of getting caught in a traffic jam and the fan would be a little extra insurance.
