V11 sport hugger removal
« on: August 15, 2016, 07:55:04 AM »
While doing a tail tidy on my v11 café sport, I decided to remove the hugger and plastic bits that cover the swing arm...
the swing arm looks great!!

Anyone else do this bit of modding?

Years back...agree, the hugger was horrible.

I rode mine in all weather, and was glad to have the hugger.  Got plenty of road grime and grit all over everything as it was.

The open swingarm does look cool.  I replaced both of my huggers with small carbon fiber inner fenders from Ghezzi-Brian (which allow a full view of the swingarm. I wouldn't run a totally open wheel, because I don't want to coat the shock with grit and grime.

The GB fender, while smaller than the plastic hugger, protects the shock more. The OEM hugger fits above the lower shock bolt and funnels the road spray up into it. The GB unit is not perfect, and takes a little more work to fit than other options, but once it's in you don't have to remove it to get the wheel out. (the belly pan is also from GB)

I find all GB stuff very overpriced and for mine a rear hugger should run in much closer proximity to the rear tire. The GB unit looks like it should be on a dirt bike.
Quality looks nice though.

If you're not living on the edge you're taking up to much room.

The GB bits weren't cheap - but the $US dollar has been pretty strong compared to the Euro lately, so the price seems fair in $US. Might be different elsewhere.

I agree that it rides a bit too high over the rear wheel. In fact, I've been thinking about cutting (probably sanding actually) a relief in the fender where it comes close to touching the swingarm - then I could position it lower over the wheel. Will probably do that with next tire change.
