Yep.  All the racers were running dustbins in the mid-1950s.  Until they were banned.

Sonny Angel told me a tale about hammering one out of something or other and getting a little edge for a while since he was early on the curve.

The dustbin fairing was outlawed because it made the bike unstable in crosswinds, leading to a number of crashes.

Two main reasons for the instability: Center of pressure too far forward, so a sidewind tends to push the front end downwind (consider what would happen to an arrow if the feathers were attached at the tip). 

Rider responds by steering into the wind. As the bike leans into the wind, the dustbin fairing acts like a wing; low pressure on the high (downwind) side acts to lighten the front end (reducing front wheel traction, while pushing the bike back to vertical, straightening the turn. This effect can make steering feel so heavy and slow as to make the bike run wide in tight turns.

To counter this effect, modern race bikes sometimes mount perforated fairing when wind kicks up.

 The dustbin fairings also allowed for some really fast top speeds  on tires that were not up to the job . They were pretty slick , ever wonder how motorbikes producing 50 HP were capable of reaching 150 MPH ?

Not sure if Guzzi was first-I doubt it-and the V8 wasn't the first Guzzi to use a dustbin either.

Make the dustbin cool again? When was it cool before? I bet a lot of folks would end up on their side in a parking lot.
