V11 Sport Crankshaft Alternates?
« on: August 20, 2016, 11:36:06 PM »
I just roasted the crank on my Ballabio.  I seriously doubt that it is repairable, see below for pictures of the carnage.

I haven't had any luck finding a used V11 Sport crank, but California engines seem plentiful, with entire engines coming in less than the cost of a new V11 crank.  I have poked around Harpers and the California cranks have a different part number.  I can't tell what the differences are.  I am tempted to buy one of these California engines and use the front and rear bearings along with crank.  I will be balancing the crank before I build it up, probably with Carillo rods.  What are the differences between these cranks?  Alternator mount?  Timing Chain drive mount?

Sorry that happened.  Take that crank to a machine shop for a proper evaluation.  At the cost of a crank you owe yourself that much.

Then get Guzziology.  It will answer all those questions and some questions you didn't know to ask.

Definitely taking it in for an evaluation, but there is some bluing in the rod journal radius that scares the heck out of me.  I have only found one machine shop in Tucson that will even think about looking at it and he hasn't ever heard of Guzzi...

Guzziology 6.0 is mum on this subject.  It shows the different part numbers for the California and V11 Sport, but doesn't detail the differences.

Arizona Hardchrome in Phoenix could do that in their sleep. I've had many a Crank,Rotor,Pump shaft saved by them over the years and High Quality work. Give 'em a call and discuss it with them.   602 278 8671

Excellent!  I will call them on Monday.  Definitely worth a drive up there if they can save it.

I would recommend getting it checked out to see if it can be saved. However, I did transplant a 2003 Hydro motor crank and rods into a V11 Sport.

Thanks.  That's good to know.

After seeing those cranks are Nitrided, you may luck out with a good micropolish and a first or second undersize set of rod inserts. Your machinist  or the guys at AZ Hdcme should be able to tell you after Measuring the journal. Good Luck. If you need specs on the journal let me know I have all the 2000 model year specs.

I would think you could have it fixed- polished or re-made.

In addition to other suggestions, these guys are famous for crank work-

All Guzzi cranks since forever have been nitrided. V11 cranks aren't listed as having oversized bearings and are in theory 'Ungrindable'. Problem is California cranks are essentially identical and you can get three over sizes so it's simply a matter of finding a 'Machinist' rather than a 'Monkey See-Monkey Do' emporium with a grinding bench.

Also the reason your bike ran its big ends is well established. Fit a sloppage sheet during the rebuild or it will just do it again.

The oil filter backed off because I didn't fit the hose clamp to it, and I didn't notice that the oil pressure light wasn't lighting before I started the engine.  When I lost oil pressure I didn't recognize the symptoms and didn't shut down fast enough.  I have had one of your plates (a real Pete Roper plate, not an imitation) installed since 2011...

Loose filter will definitely do it too! Yeah, a hose clamp will stop it unwinding although I've never had one loosen on a V11 but I tend to do them up 'F*#% off*' tight even if it means I have to drop the sump to get them off next time! It's better than buggered big ends!

The worse part is that I usually did fit the hose clamp.  On the last oil change I forgot and found the hose clamp on the bench after I filled the sump, "I'll remember it next time" :embarassed:.

Called them today.  They no longer grind crankshafts... At least it saves me a trip to Phoenix.

Nope.  Wix 51215.

cruiser and sport cranks have different part #s because of different top end weights and balance factors. Carrillos are around 1/4 lb lither than stock. as long as you balance the crank, a Cal crank will work fine.

If you can get a fingernail in the scoring, it needs a regrind.

If you can't find anyone else to do it, the shop I use can. Usually costs $150 to grind and micro-polish.

Soryy for the bum steer Enderw88,

You might give Iron Horse BMW there in Tucson a call and see if they have a recommended machine shop. A little closer to home

Thanks for confirming my suspicions on the Cali cranks.  A board member has graciously sold me a Cali crank with a minor flaw.  I will find a machine shop (I called around and found a few more here in Tucson)  and take both.  Hopefully one can be brought to spec.
