Dashboard again
« on: September 01, 2016, 11:04:59 AM »
Hi all,
I am new to this forum, but i made a search, which gave me some results but not particulary that what happened few days ago to my bike.

Occasionally oil pressure sensor failure indicator comes up.
I started the bike with no problems. Drove some 500m till crossroad. Stopped. When road was clear i started moving, but then bike just died. All lights from dash gone blank.

First i thought its my bad working with clutch and so. I pulled bike on side of the street, made key into off position, then again on, as i remember - nothing. I think i repeated that and dash went on and bike started with no problems as well as rest of jorney was no issue.

But then when i rode i noticed that clock and trip has been reset. This lead to me that this was not my error working with clutch, but something else.

Has anyone had that kind of situation before?
Bike is 1200 sport 2v per cylinder.

I was riding to leave the bike for transport company. Now bike is in italy waiting for me to pickup and do some riding italy-croatia. But that thing which happened just then keeps me a bit worried.

Clean your battery terminals thoroughly and the earth point at the starter motor cover mount.

You may have more than one problem, with both presenting themselves through the same interface.

Fully test your battery, check that the terminals are clean and well attached, apply the protectant of your choice (just not dielectric grease, people will ride from the grave). Check the connector at the back of the dash and make sure it is well seated.

For the oil pressure sensor, this is a common and well known issue on big blocks (and often small blocks) and may be completely independent of other problems at the dash or in the electrical system. First, the sensor itself is somewhat prone to failure. Second, the wiring to the sensor includes a rather problematic connector on bikes prior to the current design. The sensor uses a nail-head post with a slide-on connector that often does not reliably conduct. Check the connection at the sensor and make certain it is making contact. Take a look at the thread at http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=77673.0 and let me know if you might need one of these kits - they're free for anyone who donates to support the forum, even a small amount.

As the two previous posters pointed out there's probably nothing more than a bad battery connection.
ALWAYS apply some sort of grease to the connection. :violent1:

Well the story for oil pressure sensor is known and that is not the thing which worries me.

However the dash blackout that is. Terminals on battery are solid (will check them once more when will arrive to Milan) and battery is brand new. Installed 2 month ago as previos went out.

Connectors to back if the dash. Than might be an issue. Will try to search forum for any tips on how to do that. Just dont want that to happen while on highway doing 150 km/h

Usually internal dash problems begin as partial, intermittent failures. For example, the turn signal or high beam indicators, or the LCD screen. The facts that you have a totally dead dashboard, and that you lost the clock and trip settings, suggest the problem is in the external power supply to the dash. (Assuming there were no partial failures before.)

Getting to the multi-pin connector on the back of the dash should be straightforward. However, the design of that connector looks pretty foolproof, and I haven't read of any actual problems with it. Definitely recheck your battery and other external wiring connections, including the ground mentioned earlier.

I expect the problem will affect you on your trip. It is certainly possible the dash itself is failing. If this seems like the only possibility after investigating the external power supply, you could remove the dash from the bike, and then strip it to the point where the back surface of the printed circuit board (PCB) is revealed. You might see corrosion damage. In any event, you could then take the PCB to a cell phone or computer repair shop and ask for help. Could be a quick fix.

If none of that works, you'd be looking at an $800 (U.S. price) replacement dashboard. That could also be a relatively quick fix if you find a Guzzi shop.

There is a place called Carmo in the Netherlands (carmo.nl) that has a good reputation for dashboard repairs, but that wouldn't be fast enough to help you on your trip, I suppose. [EDIT: However, I just found this at carmo.nl: "We try to test and if necessary repair / overhaul everything in three days, it almost always succeeds."]

Here was my experience inquiring about this type of repair at a cell phone shop: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=84988.0.

Good luck.

When you say terminals on the battery are "solid", do you mean tight? That's not good enough.
I have experienced (by a friend who wouldn't listen) the battery becoming completely disconnected although the terminal bolts were tight, this happened less than 2 weeks after installing a new battery.
Lead Oxide forms on the terminals and can creep in between the post and lugs gradually reducing the Electrical contact area to a tiny spot until it fuses usually but not always during starting when heavy currents are flowing, the bolts are still tight, the terminal feels tight and it is, it's just not connected.
I'm sure we have all experienced going out to a car on a cold morning, getting a click then nothing. I would love a $ for every battery that's been junked right there.

Applying some form of grease to the terminal after it's been cleaned prevents Air getting at the Lead so it doesn't Oxidize.

Since the bike died I suspect it's more than the dash, does unplugging the dash stop the bike?

When you get to Milan take the leads off, scrape the terminals and apply a little grease, I prefer to use Vaseline because it's fairly clean although in a pinch would use grease or even the oil wiped off the dipstick.
Check the main ground also.

As an apprentice on the railways I cut my teeth on lead acid batteries, I know of what I speak.

Have a fantastic Holliday.

P.S. read this thread, anything seem familiar?
