850T Throttle cable routing
« on: September 02, 2016, 05:11:32 PM »

Can someone confirm the correct throttle cable routing? When I go full right it drops the idle and full left it speeds up. Which tells me it's probably binding somewhere.

At the carb end they come out between the tank and top frame rail.

The only thing I can see is the the cables appear twisted one turn around each other up at the throttle end. Easy enough to correct and see if that helps.

Is the location correct?

There's not really a "correct" location, just put them in a place where they don't bind. Pinched between the tank and the frame, no bueno

These are pictures of a typical tonti frame (750 S3) throttle cable routing, original installation prior to restoration. Note hoe the throttle cables are routed along and over the frame rail to the carbs. Your 850T should be very similar.

Cables from the throttle and through the triple clamp

I matched the cable installation after the restoration and have not experienced any issues.

If your idle is decreasing when turning, you should add some free play at the carb connections; the slide should be limited by the idle screw, not the cable.  I took these pictures while canuck750 was posting, but similar.

Take the tank off and check the cables that way.

This. There may be other things in the way that you may need to work around. Main harness for example. Each bike that has been worked on over the years will hand slight variations on how things are routed and overlapping.

Just checked mine real quick, and I found the route to be best on the other side in my case. I have stock coils and remember having to dodge around those a bit too.

The original cable routing was as canuck750 shows. Both cables down between the tank and frame on the right hand side. I was shown many years ago what for me was a better way. I route one cable down each side then cross them over the top of the top frame tube.

I tie the cable to the frame here on each side. This is the right side (throttle and speedo cable)

I wonder if the stiff throttle on mine is caused by incorrect routing as well - hand starts aching after just a short time on the road.

Britcheflee.
I have to be careful as I have a damaged hand and wrist. The return springs in the carbs are a little heavy but the cables should move freely. I find that it's not opening the throttle which makes my hand ache but holding it open. This is one reason why I use the throttle damper screw under the twist-grip (Tommaselli 2C) to prevent the throttle closing. The other reason is so I can make hand signals as I don't have indicators fitted.

Make sure you lube the cables, ends and slides.
