I've ridden on like that, in Innsbruck next to the ski jump.
Yes, fun, inexpensive, but really not that thrilling.

I assume the road up the mountain with the switchbacks was already there, and they built the coaster track to follow that road.

  Nice and a fun way to get down the mountain, but you are limited in your choice of destinations.

Reminds me of when we used to go Alpine Sliding when I was a kid. Similar to this, except you went down a small bobsled type track, in a sled on wheels. If you went fast enough around a curve, you could fly off the track...what fun!

These things are growing more popular in North America, too, as ski resorts scramble for summer revenue.

In this case the "cycle" is locked to the track so it can't fly off. The rider however can fall off. Return the cart to the top via ski lift.

Vail has a new coaster that works like a roller coaster -- two rails, and after the run (less than 2 minutes) you ride back to the top on a straight section, hauled by a moving belt. Problem with these is you can't pass.

Breckenridge built parallel tracks so you can race your buddies. It's a trough rather than a set of rails, and if you don't control speed you can bounce out. See this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvERb0C1Pvs   Should be a helmet sport for the testosterone-driven.

I have seen these mono rail systems in many areas of Italy, they are used to harvest grapes on steep slopes, there is a cog rail on the center of the mono beam that the tractor unit engages to climb up very steep slopes pulling a string of wagons behind. Looks like some clever individual built one for a thrill ride.
