It happens every time
« on: September 20, 2016, 04:31:07 AM »
I'm in Seattle again, and once again I found myself shut in a room full of masked men, and once again they rendered me unconsious, cut my throat, and took my money.  You'd think I'd learn.

For those folllowing -- surgery was today and I'm back on Whidbey Island for a few days R&R before heading back to Sitka to finish packing.  They ended up going with plan "B", which was good for a scrip of the good stuff, but the scar is forever.  Runs right through where the ol' helmet strap goes.

The good part is always that I can make the report first-hand.  :)

I had my throat cut in 1981 but got 2 scars, 1 follows my beard line, the other from the trake. When I woke up I coughed the trake out, they put me right back out.
Get well & rest.

Glad you made it through that part but you probly won't be on vocals for Edgar Winters White Trash. Heal well and watch out for infections. We are on a road trip with the RV, trailer and motorcycles. The forecast is for torrential rain tomorrow , we plan for 200 miles to southwest Wisconsin, Cassville.

we got to the little shopping plaza down the road from my sister's house and she went in for a can of campbell's cream of chicken soup, which must by rule be offered and accepted under surgical circumstances.  I waited in the car, since I had this huge strip of gauze around my neck stained in betadine and spotted with red and a shunt hanging out, looking like I'd escaped the emergency room to avoid 'splaining the stab in my neck.  Besides, I was still in those silly yelow hospital booties that the same old lady has put on me in every hospital I've ever been in for any reason, ever.  I hate yellow.  But my back needed some relief after all that commuting and being uncoscious for the day, so I took a few laps around the grand cherokee (turned over 100k saturday, in the Burlington, WA fred meyer parking lot -- the jeep, not me) with one hand on the car on account of see above.

As I tottered around, I noticed the stores and types of cars in the lot, bumper stickers, etc and got a feel for the neighborhood.  They were having free flu shots in the lobby of something or 'nother.  There was a sandwich sign about it blocking the sidewalk.  Two guys were arguing about the conspiracy side of flu shots v who got to pay for it when it's 'free'.  I did my laps.

I was feeling less sedated and bolder with my balance, so I left the car and wandered down the sidewalk reading bulletin boards and sale signs.  My sister tends to take a long time finding the soup  sometimes, but bless her heart, she'll cook it, too.  I have no complaint.  But I did outwalk my pill, so I leaned on the sidewatch sign to gather the gumption for the trek back to the jeep.

That's when a gramma-type started down the sidewalk with her 9-year-old grandson (assumptions) in tow.  When she saw me she wanted to detour out into the rain to avoid passing me on the sidewalk.  I was slow on the uptake, but then I pictured what she was seeing and decided that wandering the sidewalk with bloody gauze around my neck (probably hiding big bolts) wasn't the best 'scrip-addled decisions I'd made today.  I didn't think there was going to be a second chance to make a good first impresion, and she seconded that thought when she leaned down and said to the boy "just look straight ahead."

But he couldn't help staring at me.  So I looked down at the flu shot sign I was leaning on, then back at him and said cheerfully "I'm sure  yours will go better."  Gramma's eyes and mouth made perfect "O"s.  I waited until they disppeared into the foyer and tottered back to the car.

My mother-in-law had her throat cut and was told about some sort of oil to put over the wound that really reduces the scaring.

My Da had neck surgery. The only lasting side effect is that he can't stand to wear crew-neck tee-shirts anymore...v-necks only.  He's not wld about turtlenecks, either...

The stuff my wife used after her surgery was a brand called Bio-Oil, if I recall properly. Very helpful when the area of the scar will be moving a lot after healing, keeps it from healing too tight.

I am pretty sure I would have to agree. I tore some skin off my leg down to the bone. Had been putting Bio-oil on and the wound looked good. 6 weeks away with no Bio-Oil on and it has gone all puckered. Will see if it recovers now that I will be starting to re-apply.

I used vitamin E oil on both my achilles and back incisions and got great results. If you take the supplements you can squeeze the oil out of the gel thingy.
Glad you are doing well.

I've been wearing a silicone pad on my inscision for a few weeks.  It was discovered to work great on burn scars and now it's use is expanding.

On the bottle it says not to apply it to the raw wound.
The chunk of flesh I took off was a bit over an inch in diameter. as the skin covering grew from the outside I started applying it to the new skin. The wound is a completely different colour, a very dark brown, but there are no craters or anything like that.

In the three days that I have started re-applying it I have noticed a decrease in the puckering. I think this may be an ongoing thing I will have to do.
