Could never have been bad idea, ambitious, perhaps but lessons learned are the ones that stay learnt.

People from big countries like US, Canada and Straylia have advantages and disadvantages when it comes to travelling,
A/ It is easy to do big trip at home & learn how to pack a bike, how to live off the bike, all where food is similar, language and money the same etc etc
D/ Those foreign places are just that
Especially harder for older first timers, the naivety of youth gets the young ones through what experience tells some to avoid or be cautious through.
I'm old but grew up with travelbug in London, for us then (done the packing thing already) it was a ferry ride to new money , food & culture, within a week that was 3 of those changes if not 6. At a time when a phone call home cost more than 3 tanks of fuel that was not an option, so never happened.
Today with Euro , internet etc Europe is a complete doddle but still good learning curve for going further.
Agree with Roy completely, companion changes everything, personally I don't like travelling with groups of men, my girl enough but have some good friends (other couples) that make life so easy, whoever you are, it's the time off the bike that really counts, make it good.
