(NGC) Legacy Blanket
« on: September 28, 2016, 09:02:29 AM »
I've got a fall cold from the weather change and had tried a few blankets around here but the ones made today are too light.  I looked in another closet and bingo, the one my Grandmother made for me at Christmas 1984 (she sewed in the date on the corner with her name)  My first thought whenever I crawl under this one is the feeling of a bundle of shingles lying on you!  This one plain works!
That's been one gift I'll think of her forever for every time I pull it out.... I'm sure she figured that to be the case!

What's been a lasting gift a grandparent has given you?

My mother's mother gave me many nice things over the years, but one simple little gift of a roll of quarters stands out.  I took one or two out only when I was just a little short of money for something, and every time I did, I thought of her.  I was amazed at how long that roll lasted and how handy it was when I needed it.  Of course, back then a quarter was worth about what a dollar is today.
When the Brussels sprout fails to venture from its lair, it is time to roll a beaver up a grassy slope.

The legacy my grandparents left me was more a way of looking at life than a thing, although things can carry a lot of that with them.

They worked hard, worked with what they had, didn't expect anything from anybody, took care of their own, and made no excuses when something went bad.   Yet they were happy and loving people - didn't effusively express it, but you could feel it and enjoy it.

Lived to be 75, 86, 88, and 96 respectively, so I got a good long look, and have always appreciated it.

Funny, I was sitting in a Dr. Office yesterday waiting for my wife when an elderly lady sat in back of me.....whatever she uses to "pretty up" smelled exactly like my Gram....whom we lost thirty years ago....brought me back in an instant.....had to turn around just to see....

Interestingly , my full blood Lakota grandfather taught me to be proud of my German heritage , and my full blood German grandfather taught me to be proud of my Lakota heritage . They didn't know each other very well , probably having only met maybe twice , but their common respect for each other left a lasting impression on a 5 year old boy , a great gift .

The only lasting "gift" left from any of my grandparents is my mom.  Both of my paternal grandparents had passed before I was born, but I did get to enjoy some time with the maternal side. Guess I got my stubbornness from Grand-dad Roberts.

I do have two small patch-work quilts that my ex-wife's grandmother made. My ex threw them in the trash when she left and I retrieved them. Not the most attractive colors, but Helen put a lot of work into them and I can appreciate that, even if her grand-daughter didn't.

I'm not sure where it is as Kim hides it from me, but the only thing I have from my grandmother's house is a wool double blanket from the early 20's.  Darn thing is still in great shape and every time I'm under the weather it comes out (if I can find it!).

You could put one of those little GPS trackers inside the blanket.

Never had the opportunity to meet any of my grandparents but I'm sure I inherited habits of hard work and treating others as I like to be treated. I do have a wool blanket dad had in WWII it's itchy as hell!
