Winter is Coming

It is a colder freeze tonight.

It can't happen too soon for me. The firewood is laid in and I'm just waiting to ski. But I'm at odds with the wife as she has to drive to work everyday and I don't.

Winter can wait. We're about a week behind schedule for a freeze, and none in the forecast. Highs in the low 70s next couple days, then a day or too of rain and highs dropping to the 50s. In case winter ever comes I've got a half ton of wood pellets to fuel the stove on hand and another ton awaiting pickup at the local farm store. Winters been so mild that Fleet Farm has marked pellets down to $3.49 for a 40 pound bag, and corn prices are below $3 a bushel, so should be a cheap winter for heating... But I'm going to Florida anyways!

Cant wait for the cooler weather, rode up to Julian (nice and cool) then down to Borrego springs on Friday (100 degrees). Hope to get to use heated gear this winter but since buying it two years ago only used it briefly once.

I wouldn't mind riding through Death Valley during the winter.

I do several times every year - sometimes I have to pick and choose the days since there's a pass or two between LV and DV, but they're lower than the ones on the Interstates.

Winter in Las Vegas generally just means the ways in and out of the valley are limited. Getting to Los Angeles can be an issue with two passes at the 5500-6500 foot level on I-15, but I can always just follow the Colorado River south and then either eat to Phoenix or west to San Diego. North is out of the question, with passes near Cedar Breaks sometimes chancy even with snow tires and a Subaru.

Lots of good riding days close to home, but that's mostly pretty boring riding. Oh well...

Yeah, I used to spend my winters @  Ford Island on a destroyer tender AD-25 for 1.5 years when in the US Navy in the late `60's.   Rode my 305 Yamaha around the island for something to do on the weekends.  Ran my first road race there @ the drag strip.

This will be our very first winter since moving to Red Rock country in April.

Winter season in Sedona is considered December, January and February. November is the tail-side of Fall and March is at the beginning edge of Spring. Average high temperatures during the winter months is in the mid-50s with average lows in the high 20s to low 30s Fahrenheit which is quite chilly.

A temperature of 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit may be cold to residents in the warmer Phoenix and Scottsdale area, but to a tourist from the east or mid-west may find that temperature range quite pleasant comparatively to the winter season in their states. There are many reasons why visiting Sedona during the winter may be a good choice.

Winter my a$$. We in North Carolina are staring down the coast looking anxiously at Hurricane Matthew and waiting for it to exit the Caribbean with 140 MPH winds.
Almost all models showing hitting the NC coast this weekend.
Bring on winter now. I take an Alberta Clipper over a whopper like Matthew.

Good luck with that one!   North Carolina is a very beautiful state...but on the coast...they do occasionally get..."The H Word" (Hurricanes!!!)

You sure?   All the tracks I see have it well out to sea coming north.   Maybe some swells and rip currents on the coast, but no "hit" .....

Sounds just like our winters in Kingman.    As for snowflakes, we may get some 1 or 2X a year in a light dusting that melts the same day.

Thanks for the heads up. Considering we really didn't get a real winter last year in N.E. bring it on. I've always said that the reason for fall is that raking leaves gets us in shape to shovel snow. Barely a leaf on the ground yet, no hard frost yet either, but the acorns are huge and squirrel tails are mighty bushy. An old timer told me the other day "you have to shovel out of a drought"

Winter means riding season has begun in earnest...couldn't ask for better weather these days!  As long as it's not raining, riding for the next 6-9 months is going to be great!
