Cosmetically I think they did a great job.

Modern BMW's are always a little "top heavy" looking, but this one isn't unsightly in this regard.

The color scheme is reminiscent of the Martini Racing cars (BMW) from the 80's

If it is indeed only $15000, then that's a deal!

A good series of pictures of the BMW Racer-

http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/bikes/2017-bmw-r-ninet-racer/

Also-

The Racer should weigh-in at about 500 pounds wet and we expect a MSRP around $15,000

It should be nothing to sneeze at:

110HP/85.5 pounds of torque

(The former R1200S posted 122HP at about 460 pounds wet)

.

Will it have a Moto-GP or WSBK team to back it up?

I mean, if it's not a world class racebike, then what's it good for?

What would have to be done to an MGS 01, to fit an 8 valve Norge motor in? Or is it just not possible ?

A crankshaft with a nose-mounted alternator.

I know we've had this before but with the resources that Guzzi have, wouldn't an MGS 01 with an 8 valve mill from the Griso, go head to head and out sell the likes of that BM ? The engine is as good a performer in the real world and there's no competition in the looks department. Who here would take the Beemer in preference, or even in the non biased open market. As for the argument that a Panigale will beat it and no one will want one, how do they sell any Dukes when anything with 1000 cc's from Japan will see them off ?

I like it!   I just road an R-Nine-T for the first time a couple weeks ago, and really like it.   Say what you will about boxers vs. Guzzi V-twins, the Cam-head in this bike with the exhaust they put on it, has a very good performance, and a great sound.   I'd take one over a Griso.

Some of us here have wished for the MGS chassis and one of the modern engines.

1200 8V is dead.  Something new will be shown at EICMA/INTERMOT coming up.

But yeah, Guzzi needs a sporting motorcycle in the lineup.

So, the R9T has been selling well, has it?
And Guzzi has a model that would match it well enough, but couldn't be bothered?

If I remember correctly, the MGS-01 was largely the work of Ghezzi and Brian.  The Ipothesys is another fabulous rendition done by a privateer.  I wish Guzzi would work a deal with him to use his inspiration.

I'm not exactly convinced the R9T has been a big seller.

And no Guzzi didn't really have a model to match it well enough. I mean the MGS-01 wasn't street legal and being more than a decade old it probably wouldn't make current emissions, and the Griso well, WAS arguably the closest thing we had to the R9T and you see it's fate along with the rest of the CARCS.

So I'm not sure we can say there are missed opportunities here, unless you're saying a Griso with a Café kit would have sold 3 more in a given year.

 :embarrassed:  I stand corrected.

Damn, and to think barring maybe one large bike gathering I haven't seen a single one on the street.

Also amazing to think that's what, better than 50% of Guzzi's yearly production all in that model.

I was thinking the same thing. 5th most popular BMW and I haven't seen one. I even belong to a small local BMW riders club and no one even mentions them. Weird. I guess I'll have to bring up the subject at the next gathering and see what kind of reaction I get.

I always read your insights Kev and always am interested by what you say, but here's a couple of things. Yes the MGS 01 was not street legal, but if you had the alternator issue sorted, what's involved in adding minimalist gear for the street ? It's the raw visceral appeal of the Guzzi versus the perfumed young businessman approach of the BMW. Does the Griso mill still meet the requirements for emissions ? And I still maintain that although I'd love to see Guzzi's market share a bit higher, it's the fact that we are a fringe element that I now enjoy in my later years on bikes. And bugger me, let's chip in and buy old Jock a place on Lake Como and put him to work there, I'd be keen on anything he oversaw....

Well, I did have the Griso in mind.
When I saw the first photos of the R9T I thought BMW had stolen what they perceived as an exciting design.
I very rarely see any so I wonder what happened to all the R9Ts they say have been sold.... Maybe it's a huge hit in some obscure market?

The MGS-01 was over a decade ago and was race only, I imagine what with be necessary to make it emissions compliant.

The Griso and the rest of the CARCS were not going to make the next EU emissions standard either, and though it's certainly possible they could be brought into compliance, but what would it cost in performance/efficiency?

I guess I'm just saying it wasn't simple as just building and selling them.

I read today, that 2017 R-Nine-T's engine has been brought into Euro compliance, and, one of the results is that fuel economy has dropped from 52 to 45!

15% higher fuel consumption!?!?    That can't be good for the environment (I'm not just talking emissions here, but, also the environment costs of extraction, processing, and transport of said fuel).

The new Ducati 959 replace the outgoing 899, same HP, but, Euro 4 compliance.   The Hyperstrada grows from 821 to 939.    It is likely that the HP isn't much more, the rest dealing with Euro 4.

If I was looking for a canyon carver it'd be much lighter or I'd just hop on TR650.  :thumb:

After spending a fair mount of time on a Stelvio I have become enamored with the Griso. Hands down the 1200 Guzzi platform is my favorite drive train of all time. From old to new BMWs, EVOs, A/C Ducks, and all manner of rice the Guzzi CARC takes the prize.

Previously I didn't really have one favorite. Sort of a three way tie between the CB400F (for fast curvey road work), FXDS Conv (for touring), and the 900SS for track days.

Those were all great chassis/drivetrain combinations but none were as good in as many areas as the Stelvio.

The both old (R75/6) and new (R1150RS) BMWs were good bikes but both suffered from a lack of soul stirring. The drive trains were just bland.

If Guzzi pulls the plug on CARCs for '17 I'll find a way to put a new Griso in the shed.
