Newbie with main beam warning light stuck on
« on: October 08, 2016, 11:09:44 AM »
Hi, new to the forum. I picked up my first ever Guzzi last Sunday. A Breva 1100. Clean and tidy but had the intermittent starting problem. After joining the forum  I found the cure and quickly rewired the relay. It also smelt of petrol so have followed the tips and made a plastic washer to shim out the seal, a marked improvement but not yet cured. Today I took the bike for its first decent run of 100 miles. After starting the Breva after a lunch stop, the main beam light is staying on? The actual main beam isn't on. I have tried turning the ignition on and off along with the main beam switch and pass switch. Any ideas. I am going out now to disconnect the direct feed to the relay I wired in yesterday to see if that makes a difference. I hope not  or I will be back to square one.
Chris

The warning light is on but the main beam is not on.  Have you checked to see if you actually have a main headlamp AND a high beam which both light up?  I don't know for Guzzi electrical design, but some vehicles send a small current through bulbs to serve as a failure detector.  In my car, a brake bulb filament break will trigger a warning even if I don't step on the brakes.

The main beam works fine? I have just been out and checked my wiring mod. The light no longer comes on even when the main beam is switched on(which works)? I must have disturbed a relay perhaps?

The actual main beam isn't on. I have tried turning the ignition on and off along with the main beam switch and pass switch.

The bulb has lost the ground path. Either through a wire, the socket, or even a failed bulb. So the power isn't going to ground, it it passing back to the high beam indicator.

Did you mess with the wiring, is that what you are saying?

I put a direct feed to the starter relay yellow wire as suggested in another thread. I may has disturbed another relay?
Thanks for your advise

Does your headlight work normally?
If you have the wrong pin grounded or no ground the Voltage will show up on the other filament.

The headlamp works perfectly. The main beam warning light works during the start up diagnostic but not when you use main beam?

You initially said:

"After starting the Breva after a lunch stop, the main beam light is staying on? The actual main beam isn't on. "

So you have completely confused me.  :coffee:

The blue high-beam indicator (on the dash) is "on".

The actual high-beam on the headlight is not.

Okay, so to restate the problem:  The headlight works perfectly but the high beam indicator light (blue light on dash) is always on regardless of switch position.
