"I kind of like the shot gun pellet look on the tank."

Screw that.  Just take some pictures for posterity then tear it down and give it the full monty.

It deserves that.

I'm afraid that you've been over ruled.      ............

It all depends on your taste and sense of humor. Leave it as is (de-rust it and with a clear coat or the like to protect it) and make it run like a scalded monkey, or make it look factory fresh, or make it your own colored bike.

"Screw that.  Just take some pictures for posterity then tear it down and give it the full monty."  Sorry.....you can't have an opinion on this.

that bike would be extra cool if you do all the work to get it into a good running bike but kept it "as is" in the cosmetics.. new bike inside, rat bike exterior.. name it the "Fence Post.. "

"Screw that.  Just take some pictures for posterity then tear it down and give it the full monty."  Seems we agree but our opinion is not allowed.

Kept as is, and running, it'll become legendary like the rusted T3 overgrown in the bushes in California

Restored, it'll be like all the other $20k v7 sports...

Just me, though, I've never had a perfect restor...

I started tear down yesterday. In every little crevice or hole I find more bug carcasses or sand. As funky as it is, I am pleasantly surprised that the general condition is not too bad. I got a message yesterday that MI has 15% off on parts through Jan. Maybe I will be able to afford a paint job after all!  I am hoping to get it up and running for $5000 - $6000. As a custom home builder, though, I know how fragile budgetary hopes can be sometimes. I'm anxious to get into the engine and trans. All the running gear has oil in it and it looks pretty clean considering the way it has been "stored". I haven't found any chunks of metal and the magnets have been coming up clean. Dropping the pan should tell me a lot. I really hope to figure out why the guy just abandoned it. Probably something stupid, like electrical. It is a fun investigation.

Just my guess Si, but I'd bet there was a woman involved somehow.

From my experience, a couple of common reasons are clutch and u-joint. Neither is really an issue of you are going to go through the bike anyway.  Fingers crossed for a simple fix!

Years ago at the Wisconsin rally I saw a first gen. LeMans 850 that stopped me in my tracks. Flat black rattle can sprayed on everything, straight pipes. I could not fathom the thought process that could do that to the 2nd most collectible Guzzi twin...just because you can...!!!!!!
