Just sent our intrepid traveler on his way. Here he's suiting up for the light rain he'll have to drive through for the next couple of hours. Naturally, this requires red suspenders. (Guzzi content)

If he'd truly left in the AM as planned, he could have avoided the rain, but there was Squaw Candy (smoked salmon) to get going, sh!t to shoot, etc.

It's been a really enjoyable visit. You *do* meet the most interesting characters on a Guzzi..

Closing in on Louisville. Still raining. Decided to slab it until I'm out of the slop. Unkempt -- great meeting you and the lunch crew. Chuck, tell dorcia she's a keeper, and you're not so bad yourself. Hope you can make that salmon work with that smoker. Call or pm if it gets confusing. Dusty it's 6:30. I'll be here (dinner) for the next .5 hour trying to dry out.

Chuck I dot think the hour delay would have made a difference. It was driving rain and fog until Bowling Green, and the roads were sloppy until Nashville. GPS touchpad failed. I picked up enough mud to plug the radiator fine and drive the atf temp up. Cleared it with the last of my brakecleen. Headed for Memphis as soon as I finish this pulled pork sandwich in Bucksnort, KY. Yes, Virginia there is a Bucksnort.

In 1978 I rode my '74 Norton to Lake Tahoe from Havana Il.not an obvious route you say,well there was a girl in Lexington Ky...anywho after leaving her place I was motoring west with a purpose,it was late Oct. pop over a hill and the State Police was stopping all traffic.I told the cop that Ford Galaxie just passed me and that was what the radar caught. Bucksnort TN used to be a decent truck stop and restaraunt in the 80s when I lived in Nashville. We always stopped in on our way to/from Oklahoma. There is a trout farm a few miles off that exit. These days it's just a gas station. They will still sell you a Bucksnort hat if you fancy one.....

Accident in baton rouge stopped me at the base of the big bridge. Overheated. Engine quit. Gave it a couple minutes and restarted long enough to find a shoulder. Cooling it down now. Out of coffee.

Safe at a gas station. Running rough, but so far no nasty noises. Gonna cool me down with a slurpee and cool the trike all the way down. Then I'm going to install an oil cooler on this puppy.

It's and automatic right? When I added a sidecar to my Convert. I added an ATF cooler in series and a temp. gauge to monitor the ATF fluid temp. so I wouldn't blow any seals. Many a time at slow speeds I'd have to shut down for a few minutes to let the ATF fluid cool down before it got too hot.

True - but if 'twere me, I might put a cooler on for the oil and another for the tranny! And here in the Mojave, I might even put a fan on each of 'em!

But they are attached and when the tranny overheats unless you have a thermometer on it you have no clue. When the seals harden from too much heat then you lose the ATF fluid. Then if the motor is OK you still ain't going anywhere any more.

I forget the temp. limit of the seals but it's not that much.

RK has temp and pressure sensors on the engine and transmission , maybe some reading about his trike is in order , the cockpit looks like a flight engineer's work station on a B29

On my `80 Convert./hack rig had 2 ATF coolers and a H20 temp gauge in the ATF tank to monitor the ATF fluid temp. In slow moving the ATF fluid temp. could climb real fast so then I would pull over for a few minutes 'till the fluid settled down, then proceed again. Never lost a seal.

Dang. I have a brand new oil cooler that I've been looking for a use for. Thinking of using it for a chiller on my air compressor, but it would have looked good on the trike.

Safe at swamp scooters. Rolled in straight-up midnight. I'm having my doubts about these southern boys' ability to party -- the place was completely dark and quiet. I was told to look for the guzzi camp by the bayou. They didn't tell me to look for all two of them, so it took a while stumbling in the dark to find any. I was waked about 7:30 by the people circling the trike.

I let the trike cool down to ambient temp at the gas station and gave it a few miles in town before hitting the I-10 for the last hour of travel. everything seems normal -- no clatter from the hydro, and temp/pressures in normal ranges. Idle is lumpier than usual. I maybe got away easy on this one.

I have temp and pressure gauges on the engine and transmission. I could watch them go up, but I was on a bridge with emergency vehicles using the shoulder -- no place to get off and shut it down. When the temp gauge said 300f, the engine shut down. I was on the upslope of the bridge with traffic and no shoulder at all. used my brake handle for emergency flashers. Dicy, since every time I pulsed them the trike would roll backwards. It was 10 minutes before it would restart.

I bought a triumph oil cooler and have it on board, but it's going to take some plumbing and tube cutting to make fit, and I haven't gotten a round tuit yet (cue Penderic with the round tuit, please). I better put it higher up on the list.

The atf has a fair sized radiator with a fan behind it. I don't know why the fan didn't come on.

Swamp Scooters was a hoot, although if I told them so they'd have no idea what I meant. HOOT isn't a word down here. There were the standard things -- field games, tent or RV camping, food, and good company, all with a bit of a bayou twist. I was priveledged to dample jambalya, grits and bourdoun (sp?) and Sat night was a gumbo cookoff. I'd never had gumbo, so it was interesting tro try seven varieties, note the differences, and rate them. My un-tuned palate ranked them in the winning order. So I might not know gumbo, but I know what's good.

At the awards assembly the room went quiet when a Nevada rider was awarded long rider. Then folks started hollering "What about Alaska?" I didn't complain. The guy was on a bMW (rally brand) and two wheels. I was off-brand and thee wheels. I figured I didn't qualify. But a bunch of people went to the organizers and 'splained thm Alaska, so one of the organizers came looking for me in the morning and said they'd redo that. I told him I was just there for the gumbo, but he's sending the plaque to my sister's address.

Tried to leave early Sunday, but the blown airbag wouldn't pump up enough and the wheel was hitting the fender. So a few late campers help me crank up the shocks all the way to compensate. The compressor is staying ahead of the leak, but repairs will be needed asap.

The airbag was holed when the radiator fan broke loose from its mount and chopped it up. That might explain why the torque converter overhearted. Finding the problem is the better part of fixing it, so I'm going to limp up to Texas and rub turnips on it. The Motor Trike factory is close to Lindale. They'll have the parts.

I'm about an hour out of texas bouncing like that ball you follow to sing along with Mitch. The blown airbag had my compressor running constant and only half pressure, so I shut it off. 0# pressure is like springs and no shocks.

I'm at the oleo ranch with Ken Hand today. Got in last night. The blown airbag turned out to be more of a thing than I thought it would be. The handling was awful. It wandered on the crown, felt blowier in the winnd and near semi"s, and overreacted to any irregularity in the road. That I expected. What I hadn't counted on was that the wheels were sitting higher in the fwenders and the wheels were in a constant negative arc. So they rubbed on the fenders and the fender mounting bolts, setting up a horrible squeal and vibration. I stopped several times to try adjusting the fenders away from the wheels, and then adjust the wheels to change the arc. I could improv but not elimminate contact. Possible inner sidewall damage on both rear tires. I'll know tomorrow when I pull them.

I pulled the broken airbag today and found the hole -- unrepairable. But the Motor Trike factory is less than 20 miles from here. I'll visit them tomorrow and buy a pair.
