V7 Special Speedo malfunction
« on: November 02, 2016, 08:49:26 PM »
My 2013 V7 Special speedo is malfunctioning.  Turning on the ignition, speedo will peg at 140 and begin adding miles like seconds on a clock.  A 3 mile trip down the road added 150 miles to my odometer.  I have seen several threads re: bad speedos but none seem to end with a solution.  Is there a quick fix for this? or am I SOL and need to get a new (pricey) speedo?  Appreciate any assistance.  Thanks

Disconnect the battery or pull the main fuse, turn on the ignition and leave overnight. Turn off ignition and reconnect the battery/replace the fuse. See what happens! It may achieve nothing but a lot of the Digitek dashes seem to have some form of capacitor in that stores some sort of memory and if anything screws the dash function up discharging them by the above mentioned method *Sometimes* fixes stuff.

Whether this will help with your V7 I know not but its so easy and cost free it is at least worth a try wouldn't you say?

When I first got my V7 I half read the manual, but the small print and the numerous languages scattered throughout meant that I didn't take a lot in.
After a while I learnt how to find the clock. I set off on a ride, stabbing at the silver buttons before I went to get the clock displayed. After a few miles I realised that the mileage was going up rather quickly.
It took a few minutes for me to realise i'd switched it to displaying the trip meter.

Thank you for the responses.  I haven't tried anything yet.  I was looking for a place to start & learn from those who may have had the same problem I have.  I'll try disconnecting the battery and see what that does.  I'm pretty sure its not the trip clock as the miles will increase even when the bike is standing still.

I've got a couple of things for you;

1) Corrosion of the connector pins on the rear of the instrument cluster, and/poor fit.  Look at the main connector at the back of the speedo cluster.

2) Speedometer sensor is problematic, and should be suspected in any speedometer issues.  It is particularly prone to water damage and getting soaked with engine oil.  It may start working again when it dries out.  You should seal the joint at the rear of the sensor with mastic or other sealer, once dry.  For oil damage try cleaning, drying, and sealing.

3)  The sensor cable often rubs against the shift linkage by the swing arm.  Check that, and tie the cable to a nearby bracket to prevent further wear.

It was the speed sensor.  Thankfully a $31 fix.
