Outsider Filter Element

I decided to change the filter on my California II. it has an Outsider filter mod that uses the UFI 2319400
I thought it would be a simple matter of going to an auto parts store and cross referencing, forget it.
they have a million filters with a much larger threaded boss, larger by about 2mm.

In the process of looking my motorcycle dealer pulled up this site and we looked at Dean Rose's thread.
I used several of the suggested filters but they all have the larger boss.


The UFI 2319400 seems to be an odd ball
What to do?

You could replace the threaded piece with one for the larger / later filter which is readily cross referenced.

Buy a couple of HiFloFiltro HF 552 filters so you'll have them on hand when you need them?

I forgot the replacement filter for my '80 SP1000NT at home.  I found one at Advance Auto, 3000 miles away where the bike was.  It fit the Outsider I have on the bike.  Smaller in diameter but they were able to cross reference it.  Forgot the brand but it fit and I rode the bike from the Portland area to Phoenix.  No problem.

Thanks Brian, that seems to be the best solution the 20mm x 1.5 are as common as dirt, in the meantime I will use the old filter.

Thanks Dean, I went and had a close look at the unit, the threaded adapter is obviously a hydraulic fitting, it has the swage end on where the filter screws and an 18 TPI tapered thread
on the threaded end, 3/8" NPT if I can recall correctly.
The filter end is also 18 TPI not even close to the metric equivalent.
I guess the guy made the Outsider to imperial measurements.
Another thing, one of the holes was not drilled through the plate so I drilled it anyway to allow the full complement of sump screws.

That hole you drilled and the  bolt you installed just  closed off an oil passage .
Listen carefully for squeeling and knocking noises. It's your engine starving for oil.
If you ran the engine it will take just a minute or so to ruin the engine.  You have already destroyed the Outsider.

I was aware I might go through an oil-way so I used a small drill, it's usually pretty obvious if you drill through a cavity.
I looked at the unit carefully, lining up the plugs with obvious oil passageways before drilling, I didn't go through any open metal
I looked through the hole I drilled, no openings.
Just to be on the safe side I will remove the bolt before running the motor, If as you say I drilled through an oil way oil will pour out, you agree?
Why would the designer deliberately put a oil way through an obvious bolt location, perhaps accidentally on an earlier version?

I am out on the road until mid week so I can't answer specifically plus there have been several modifications to the original Outsider over the 40 years of production. Did you buy it from us or was it on the bike when you got it?  The hole has always been undrilled because of the existing Moto Guzzi factory oil galley being involved.  I should be back to work by Wednesday and if you can email. Even a picture of the Outsider I can give you a specific answer.  In the meantime I would advise you not to run the engine until we are both sure that the oil flow is not blocked.  Send me a picture to  mike@harpermoto.com

Thanks Mike, I appreciate the warning.
The Guzzi pan and the engine block were already drilled and tapped, it would have had a bolt before the Outsider was added.
As luck would have it I did take some pictures  with my phone I will download them when I get to work on Monday and send
them to you, can't download from here.

The Outsider was on the bike when I bought it. One with the 1" thick plate and internal hydraulic hose.
I think the part No is HEI 8 6 the last # is a bit hard to make out  it has two plugs in the end  and one on the side of the protrusion.
If the hole I drilled was to strike anything it would be the side of the gallery that connects filter to the rear main bearing, I believe I am
at least 1/4" away from that.
I certainly won't be running until I'm certain.

That is an older model but there is no problems that have ever arisen with them. The updated ones came because Guzzi updates to the oil pans. I suppose it's possible that you didn't hit the passage but I Think That It Would Have Been Close.
