(NGC) -Damn, one fast Mustang in Oklahoma
« on: November 17, 2016, 07:34:46 PM »
I have yet to find a road in Oklahoma that i would want to go 208mph on in anything.

My money says the speed estimate is off.

Sort of like the 205 mph sport bike in Wisconsin a decade ago.

I think that was in my State, Minnesota.. along the Mississippi MN side..
"One possibility is that the pilot got it all horribly wrong and pressed the stopwatch at the wrong time. Apparently the pilot managed to clock both Tilley and his accompanying friend (booked for 111mph on an MV Agusta F4i) at the same time, using two stopwatches - while flying a plane. This suggests that error is one distinct possibility."

I doubt there are many 208 mph 2011 Mustangs.  I think radar might be calibrated up to 100 mph but I have big doubts if that brick would go more than 155 mph.   With $10k in mods maybe 175.

200+?  really?  hardly.

Geez , I am not a car guy but am aware that a 2011 and later Mustang 500 GT with the blower will run like 190 from the factory . In these days of 800 HP street engines over 200 on fairly tall gearing would be fairly normal .

Yep.  Power isn't really the problem.  The aftermarket is full of hop-up stuff for them.

It's the gearing.  The gearing required to top 200 mph would not be fun in normal driving on the streeet. Way too tall...

I don't believe those cars can make the power to run 200 mph, not 180 IMO.

But Rock, remember, 6 speed manuals do have double overdrive trannies (50% ratio),  so gearing might not be a problem.

Yeah.  Power and gearing.  Lots of both.

I still think it's a bad reading.

I know the FL Straight Pooper that nabbed me on 60 (Gulf to Bay) on the Pinellas side of the bridge was hauling ass when he reeled in my modded '74 Z1 after changing directions from the other lane...

That was an '86 Mustang running a dual 4 barrel 351 and he stated he hit 170 catching up to me.

I believe him.

That was '86. I can see a modded '11 hitting 200+.

After some moto conversation and a look under his hood he wrote me up for 70 in a 55. Just a normal ticket.

He was a bit more than feisty tho from the get go. Said he clocked me at 138. My buddy on an '83 GS1100E saw him before I did, backed it down, and walked away $100 richer...

A Quality Tech that works for me has a 2010 Mustang GT. He is currently building it for the strip and has told me you can buy off the shelf kits to pump it up to over 800 HP, just on the engine.  If the kid was a serious clubber, I am included to believe it's possible to get 200+ out of it.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

FL Straight Pooper ? You mean State Police?  Stock 86 Mustang's largest engine was a 302 rated at about 225 HP and reamined that engine into the 90's, maybe 140 MPH If you mean State Police, then they were hot rodding their pursuit cars with engine swaps?

Years back a KS HP plane landed at our glider port to pick up a VIP which never showed. While the trooper was waiting he showed and demonstrated the clocking equipment. He said he could routinely clock six cars and fly the plane. It was not simply holding a stopwatch by any means.

I have a hard time believing he ran 200 mph.  Even harder to believe that he accelerated from 170 to 200 in relatively short distance.   That is a city turnpike and not that long.

200 is a huge number and  the aero on a mustang is a brick.

regardless whether 170 or 200 I wouldn't go very far that speed..... BLOW OUT

You have to remember the man-rules.

How fast my car is.
How many women I've had.
How big was the fish I caught.

A man will lie about these things when the truth would be more useful.

Aerodynamics would make this one invalid.

I guess some departments did that in the 1980s when the cars were such dogs.

Some Arkansas State Troopers were running 454s in thier Caprice patrol cars.  They were pretty fast, for the time...

I would need to see proof of that, got any ? . I can believe a local sheriff having a hot rod .. The 86 Mustang Police Package featured the first fuel injected 302...As fast as most cars back then...

During part of the mid to late 70s many Kansas Trooper cars were the Caprice with the 454. Remember that was the era of about the lowest output motors in modern times and the cars were huge. I visited with a trooper at the time and he said his Caprice loaded with the usual equipment would top out in the mid 90s.

The big block engine was discontinued when the Impala was down sized in 1977...... While police cars are being discussed, the this info may be of interest. The Michigan state police have been track testing patrol cars  for many years...some of the cars are surprisingly fast for what they are.. The NY State police seem to use a lot of Chevy Tahoe's.........

I believe a car can do that speed, but I wouldn't expect to be able to keep it on the road for any period of time.

Around 1980 when I was turbocharging motorhomes and pickups with off the shelf kits (prior to such being factory) I spoke with a CHP officer who said they'd tried that with their cruisers but kept blowing them up.

Disclaimer: Randy Walls was the brains of the operation, I was just another set of hands.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Don't know if they still have them but maybe 10-12 yrs ago I had the pleasure of spotting one of KHP's camaros. Rolling east on us54 west of Kingman. Spotted a sports car in my mirrors and noticed it was too plain and seemed unusual. The car passed me at a passing lane and that's when I saw it was a KHP. No external lights, just a few antenna on rear and simple paint and decal. I stopped in Goddard and he just happened to be there. Asked how fast will it go? He replied, No comment.

Downforce causes drag. So Cd isn't the only factor. You could have a low Cd and the damn car take off like a 777 because you have too much lift.

I doubt the Coex numbers.

But then the Mustang is still a good 1/4 to 1/3 more frontal area.

But I know the '12 ZR-1 won't run 208 mph and it's factory engineered with 650 hp.

That's not exactly true.  The engine continued in trucks on as the 7.4, then 8.1 GM V8 through 2009.

I had a 1977 Silverado C10 with 454 when I was in high school.  My dad bought it new.

Lots of 8.1 L 2500 Suburbans and Yukons out there, built for the RV crowd.  I was looking at a 2008 the other day, for use pulling my horse trailer.
