What post is the link in? I've searched this whole page and didn't find it.

When referencing a certain post, it seems like a good idea to include the post number. :-)

4:10 PM Dec 15 Here's the post from the other thread Vagrant is referencing:

"Vicky was transferred today to a long term care facility off I85 in Atlanta. near Druid hills I think.  this will be a farther, harder trip to make for Wayne. his daughter can take him weekends but during the week he will have no way to get there. I leave in the am for 6 days in La. and when I get back I will only be here until just after Christmas. if your in the area he sure could use a ride to and from the facility. there is no way to describe how hard this is on him. they are very close. Unfortunately there has been no change. She is still in a coma and Saturday will be three weeks since the accident. I brought Wayne home after she got transferred. he is supposed to get a walker with special support for his arm. He really needs another lighter weight wheel chair that he can cram into the back of a Mustang or safely hang on a bicycle rack. as it stands he has to go up and or down a full flight of stairs on his butt backwards then somebody has to carry the wheel chair up or down. not easy."

This is no good. Is it feasible to move him downstairs for the duration? Is there a place down stairs where a bed could be set up and is there a downstairs bathroom?

Hoping for the best for Vicky.

It's hard to get anything done for Wayne and Vicky up here in Virginia. My better half had an idea so she emailed the Gwinnett Coalition for Health & Human Services.

Here is what she found:

Does Wayne have any assistance other than his daughter on the weekend? Wonder if he or anyone has contacted his health insurance co to see if they can provide in-home assistance?  Feel helpless here in Va trying to come up with help for him.  My wife asked me how he's getting his meals, how he's bathing and what if he falls? There must be some type of help for people in his circumstance.

Praying for them both.

Right now, I have been getting assistance during the week from Saint Vagrant, GuzziKnight, a long time motorcycle/work friend Roy Hoisington, and even Dilliw traveled down.
The up/down stairs thing is not much of an issue as everything is upstairs, nothing but the garage downstairs. I just need someone to carry the wheelchair down the stairs to get to a vehicle occasionally.

Right now, dealing with the appointments for multiple therapists, the Stelvio, the multiple insurance companies, never getting any time with Vicky's doctors, and now not getting to see Vicky very often, is rough.
My short term memory sucks, it always did. Vicky was always my personal assistant remembering appointments, etc. Now I need to make these electronic boxes that I have work for their existence. Trying to track the schedules that are starting to pile up. A couple of people mentioned keeping a journal, so in my spare time I poke things into my phone.
I struggle a bit getting around the house. No big deal. Vicky always did the groceries, so that will be a learning curve. Plus working with someone, likely Amy our daughter, to get those.
Yes, falling is a concern. They made it very clear that a fall can re-fracture my pelvis, which is a very bad thing.

But my #1 concern is 50 miles away in a long term care facility. I only hope that there is some improvement soon. Whatever you personally believe might help her, please send it her way.

Maybe two wheel chairs. One kept upstairs at all times, one in garage..... Not sure if that is feasible though.

I depend upon my wife for much and I think she'd be in a much better position if I died first than if she did (or we ended up being out of the picture - long or short term). Funny how that happens over the years. I've seen my folks do it and to a greater degree her folks where the sum of the parts seems to be greater than the whole.

When I needed help for my husband, the local VFW has lots of items I needed.   If Wayne is a veteran, the local VFW has wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, etc.  - all free for him to use.   They might even have someone to drive him where he wants to go.

My late husband was partially paralyzed and when I needed to get him to a doctor, I called the VFW and they had 4 vets come over and help me get him into the car and also back in the house upon our return.

If Wayne is not eligible for VFW, there should be some other sort of vet association to help.

Still sending prayers for Wayne and Vicki.

Bouncing up and down stairs on a fractured pelvis and powering such maneuvers with a broken wrist strikes me as an issue.

I'm not fortunate enough to have a significant other and I have trouble with this too. One thing I found helped a lot was to have a wall planner stuck up and  I would put a red sticky dot on the planner to remind me to look at my diary for that day.

Jeez Wayne, I can't imagine what that worry would be like. Still there is little you can do about it in practical terms other than to be there when you can.  Look after yourself.

The stairs actually are really a non-issue. The physical therapist worked with me at the hospital on stairs there, and also see it as a non-issue because of where the fracture is. As long as I don't put any weight on my right leg for a few more weeks. And moving my leg around a lot is actually good exercise. Just no weight up through the leg.
I am working on getting the correct type of walker to get around needing someone to carry the wheelchair up and down.

Wayne.. my short term memory *was* getting worse until the operation. After the gas passer got through with me, (six hours of anesthesia) it's now almost non existent. Supposedly, it will get better with time. I've been doing a journal on the computer since I retired in '92, so I know what happened every day, but without it most of what has happened since March especially would be in the fog. I think it would help you..

On the stairs I can verify that his technique, while unconventional, works just fine.  He is obeying the command to not put any weight on the entire leg but he has no problem bending it at the knee.

On the suggestion that he keep a journal, well that one was given to him repeatedly last Monday.  He has his MS Surface with him so hopefully that is happening.

Yes, Dilliw and other mentioned a journal. I started one synced between my PC and phone. It is helping me track all of the phone calls and emails. The two weeks after the accident faded quickly because I was so busy.

If it isn't a motorized chair, wouldn't s second chair be an answer?  Keep one on the 2nd floor, and one at the garage.

Yes!  But Mr. Foggy Brain  wants a walker with an armrest so it will fold into cars.  It will be so...

Still no news to report on Vicky. Just stable.

I had my first DR visit. Got all of the stitches and staples out. They decided that my wrist needs to be in a cast, even with the hardware in there.

Wayne.

I can't imagine how you must feel on this holiday weekend; but wanted you to know that we've not forgotten about you and Vicki. You are both in our prayers daily, and our thoughts throughout the day.

Am not going to wish you a "merry" Christmas, but will instead pray you have a miraculous one and that God grants you both comfort and healing. May God bless you both.

Very well said.  Reflecting the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the multitude out here.  God bless and strengthen you Wayne.

I have only met one or two on this forum but feel a kinship and enjoy reading posts both motorcycle and personal.  My wife was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer 15 months ago so I know what it means to have the support and care from family and friends.  No matter your religious beliefs the power of prayer is mighty, so thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for you both.

Our daughter Amy put together a small Christmas meal. I tried my hand at some cooking. I need a lot more practice.

Hang in there Wayne. Developing cooking skills is a worthwhile endeavor and could be useful in the near future. Fruits and fresh veggies are the best things on the road to recovery. Lots of vitamins and elements the body needs. Just know that if it come out of a box its not cooking.

In a situation like yours its easy to fall in the junk food trap out of convenience so beware.

Prayers for Vicky and hopes to see you two during the next Rally season.
