Steve Lehman just wrote me about Wayne and Vicki. Terrible news for sure. They have so many miles traveling on a Guzzi. Prayers for sure for both Wayne and Vicki. They are two of the many great people in our group. Heart breaking that Wayne hasn't been able to see Vicki. That just adds to his pain.

Wayne has been unplugged from the IV and pain meds since yesterday afternoon. he looked very good today and had walked / hobbled down the hall with the walker. he said he needed help getting back but using one arm and one leg I would have needed help too. it is going to be a long road to recovery but as always he has a positive attitude. his only concern is Vicky's condition.
Vicky is still in a coma but breathing on her own. they inserted a feeding tube today and her body reacted to it. I would hope that is a positive sign.

The healing powers of the human body are amazing. Thanks for the update. We'll keep hoping and praying that she'll be back soon ...

Went to see Wayne last night. Wasn't in his room.

When I fell off a ladder and cracked my skull my brain swelled and I was in an induced coma for awhile. Hopefully her coma is induced too. Blood came out of my left ear for 3 days and look how good I turned out.

That's right. And you can never know what a person in a coma or who is evidently unresponsive can actually feel or hear.

It may be that a simple physical contact, and a few words, can be the factor that will get her back in sync with the world. It's something where your opinion, mine, or Wayne's is as good as the doctors' ...

Thanks for that Bill. In my own experience , I got killed in'69. Mom, an RN stayed with me until they thought I would live. After three days I woke up a little and they figured I was as good as I would get. I woke up a few weeks later. I don't remember Mom staying with me but I recognized that she was not there when I woke up. Kept me out of Vietnam. I hope Vicky has a similar experience

We saw the head trauma thing with one of the members here a couple of years ago. It was a slow process, and I was fearful that he wouldn't come back. Fortunately.. he did. What AZrider posted about the brain rebooting was true with him.

not medically induced. some swelling and the word trauma was used. the have drained of the pressure.
she has a black eye and they both always use full face helmets and 1 piece Aero-stitch suits.
I will go to see them latter today.

Indeed. It is a much slower road back than one would anticipate. I am almost 18 months out from a much less severe injury. (I was unconscious for about 90 minutes, and have a pretty good memory for everything starting about a month after the accident. Before that, not so much.) Everything AZRider says is correct, in my experience. The frontal lobes are in charge of "executive functions," things like control, impulse, anger, and otherwise. Decision-making. Memory. Learning new stuff continues to be difficult; the old stuff is still there, interestingly (I can still wade through the complex and tedious process of identifying insects, for example), but even simple mental arithmetic remains a challenge. And there are "holes" here and there in my memory, things that Cathy tells me we did, or happened, that I have no recollection of. There is some physical basis for memory, and when those cells are damaged, it's just not there any more.

And everything is more difficult, especially if there is any kind of distraction. I took an hour of sick leave yesterday afternoon to get away from the two admins having a gab-fest in the office next door. I couldn't think, and realized that I was getting so angry that I was shaking. Irrational, and completely out of proportion. And not like me. Or not like I used to be. It's better to leave than explain. Absent a gaping hole in my skull it all sounds like excuse-making, anyway.

I'm told by the neurologist that my expectations ("why the hell am I not 100% yet?") are unreasonable. People go years, until the distinction between actual recovery and the development of coping skills (make lists, stay out of Wal-Mart) gets so thin it becomes the same.

I've benefitted greatly from just talking to several folks here with similar injuries. "Yeah, I did that for six or eight months, too" is both helpful and comforting. It's too early yet, but if you're reading this, Wayne, whatever I know that might be helpful is yours.

Just came back from today's visit, Hell, there's a rally going on in Wayne's room!! He's getting visitors today. Still not too good getting around but he'll get there. He may be getting therapy in the same facility which means he will be near Vicky instead of being at home. That would be great.
