Bike insurance question
« on: December 05, 2016, 05:59:40 PM »
I could ask an agent but I'll ask here ..............I have liability only on my bike through Progressive insurance....Policy says ; liability to others and mentions various amounts for this and that....There's no mention of money to pay for me if I'm injured in a wreck...Am I an "other" ?

Ixnay.

You can buy the personal injury coverage for yourself.  Whether to do so or not will depend to a large degree on the type of medical coverage you presently have.

Unless NY law is different than anywhere else , the answer is no . Your liability policy only pays if you are at fault , and then only to the "other" party . Almost all states have laws allowing for additional medical coverage to be added to a liability only policy that will cover the policy holder , usually referred to as "uninsured/under insured coverage , but that only covers medical expenses , and only then if you are not at fault .

Oh , and as Cloudbase states , usually some form of personal injury coverage is available .

What they said.  "Liability" covers the damage for which you are liable. So it's all about damage/injury to others. This would include coverage for injury to a passenger on your bike.  Personal injury to yourself (medpay) is another animal.

That's your personal medical coveraqe just like me.   On my all paid for bikes/scooters I just have liability, theft.  Towing I have with AMA for all my vehicles including, car, truck.

I checked with my agent when I had questions like yours-also a Progressive policy holder.  I added, after the conversation, additional coverage for medical which was optional. As I saw firsthand what happens when a rider thinks they are covered I made sure I understood where my exposure(s) were and covered them.

Yes, I know what liability means....My car/truck insurance, not Progressive, is liability only on one and liability/comprehensive only on the other two. The policy has high personal medical limits. 10 years ago the agency suggested I raise personal medical because it's more likely to survive a serious wreck because of modern safety features. But also more likely to have high medical costs because you didn't die..

Go into your policy online, and the first lines in the "Coverage & Premium Information" for the vehicle, should list something like this

BODILY INJURY & PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY $xx.xx
BI $xxx,000 EACH PERSON - $xxx,000 EACH ACCIDENT
PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY - $xxx,000 EACH ACCIDENT

MEDICAL PAYMENTS $xx,000 EACH PERSON

(and the list then goes on - replace xxx with your amounts)

I think that is what you are looking for, but to be sure, as you said... ask the agent or do a chat once logged into your account)

"medical payment" and "uninsured/underinsured motorist" are two different things.

The medical payment coverage will pay you a cash amount if you are injured.  In my State, the max coverage is $5,000 and it costs over $100 per year for my motorcycle.  So no, I don't carry it.  That's too much for what you get.

Uninsured/Underinsured covers you and your vehicle if in an accident with someone who is at fault and has no coverage.  This, I have.  I've seen it pay for itself with friends and family who have been hit by uninsured drivers.

Yes. In the partial policy details that I posted above (or didn't I should say), further down it also shows this:

Since you have liability only, you will be responsible for any losses to your vehicle or injury to you, if you are at fault.  (and if you are hit by an uninsured driver).

Your health insurance should cover any injuries you suffer in an accident that is your fault.

Uninsured/Under insured coverage does NOT cover any damage to your vehicle , it only covers medical . At least this is true in most states . We had this discussion some months ago , and a couple of members challenged  this . I suggested they contact their agent , they were surprised to find out their UM coverage didn't cover their vehicle . I can't tell you how many folks have this misconception .

Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage (UMBI)
Can cover medical expenses, lost wages, and injury-related expenses for you, any permissive drivers, and your passengers. It can also provide coverage for injuries sustained in hit-and-run accidents.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage coverage (UMPD)
If your car is damaged in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver, this coverage steps in to help. Unlike UMBI, this coverage doesn't protect against damage caused by hit-and-run collisions.

https://www.esurance.com/info/car/uninsured-and-underinsured-coverage

Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury:
This may pay for damages when a covered person is injured and the person at fault for the accident does not have liability insurance.

Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury:
This may pay for damages when a covered person is injured and the person at fault for the accident does not have enough liability insurance.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Property Damage:
This may pay for damages when a covered vehicle is damaged and the person at fault for the accident does not have liability insurance or does not have enough liability insurance.

Do NOT rely on this or any forum or information as important as this. Talk to a licensed professional agent. I was in the insurance industry for 40 years and witnessed too many instances of under insurance and well meaning but just plain wrong information

Medical payments coverage can help pay for the medical or funeral expenses of covered drivers and passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. In most states, it's an optional addition to your car insurance policy.

Medical Payments coverage, also known as MedPay coverage, pays medical expenses for you and any passengers in your vehicle who are injured during an accident or auto-related injury.

Insurance varies widely by State, so someone in Hawaii or California or Missouri or Massachusetts will have different options available to them, and different minimum requirements.

Yes , DON'T rely on your friends , internet forums , or Joe Bob down the street for info on any insurance , legal , or psychological questions . My point on the UM coverage was that most folks don't understand that W/O asking for property damage to be added , UMPD , there will be no PD coverage . As advised , contact your agent , and listen very carefully to his explanation of your policy. Insurance is probably the most misunderstood product most of us consume . I have some experience , and most of it still baffles me

My un/under insurance in SC covers vehicle damage.  From their website:

Just because you're responsible, it doesn't mean everyone you share the road with is as responsible as you. That's why we offer Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists Coverage. This coverage provides protection to you and your passengers if you are injured or your vehicle is damaged in an accident caused by another driver who does not have liability insurance or who does not have enough liability coverage to pay for your losses. Protect yourself against the carelessness of others

We had this claim on a hit and run that broke the rear axle on the boy's car. He can't afford collision/comp and the car would have been totaled had he not gotten the license plate as the perp sped away.

 George ,
That is why the best thing to do is contact your agent . Ask specific questions , because as stated earlier , each state is a bit different . In Oklahoma , the agent must offer UM coverage , and if the customer declines the customer must sign a form indicating they have rejected UM coverage .

Exactly!  And understand your State's laws as they pertain to "stacking" un/under coverage as well.

My un/under-insured coverage includes $3500 property damage at no extra cost .
Unfortunately that includes the tow bill which was $525 , and repair to Aerostich suit .
Still a lot of money to repair a 40 year old bike not worthy of collision / comprehensive coverage .
I thought I had read my policy well , but I found that my liability coverage included $5k medical for a small additional cost , no matter whose fault .
This may seem redundant , but a comfort in my case , because ambulance ride had been paid even before it was confirmed that the guy that hit me had no coverage .

Last time I checked price on the Medical Payment for one of my motorcycle policies here, the rate was like $130 and the coverage was only the State Max of $5,000.

Not a good spend, so I don't carry it.

Cash, HSA debit card, or Visa credit card are all much cheaper alternatives.  At least for me...

When I compared car insurance I shopped at the bottom line for the coverage that I wanted and I guess didn't really look at all of the pieces.  My agent included med pay and I never knew it was in there until we had our accident.  It paid $7k ($5k for her and $2k for me)immediately  and really kept us from being out of pocket until we settled out.  Even though I paid more for a policy from him the overall policy was cheaper than any other carrier I could find so in essence I got it for free.  Depends on your perspective!

If you already have full medical coverage like we do also having med. pay on your MC/car ins. policy just means that both our ins. co.s would decide which pays for what up to your coverage limits.  Now if you get in an accident and you are found liable for the accident and your unrelated passenger get's hurt, if their med. coverage doesn't cover them in this situation you could be liable for their injuries.

Although medical insurance will pay.....it really isn't accident insurance..... A young guy I know of was riding and hit by a car resulting in severe damge to his lower leg. After the surgeons tried to save the limb, the best outcome was to remove the lower leg... He quickly found out his great medical insurance would not pay for a state of the art prosthetic....The driver who hit him? low limit insurance and had no money..

In NY state uninsured motorist coverage is mandatory and it cost me something like $5.00 a year for coverage. The last time I checked for uninsured motorist coverage in Floriduh, it was something stupid like $1,000.00 because it isn't required. I have it on the cars because the price is reasonable, but not on the bikes.

And a good friend of mine was literally run over by a guy who rolled through a stop sign, she was in the hospital for months and out of work for almost a year. She had no uninsured motorist coverage on her bike, because of previously mentioned costs and the guy had $10K worth of medical coverage and no assets except for the damaged car.
