Passenger grab rails on Ambo

Advice please. I just got a pair of grab rails for the Ambo but I'm not sure how to fit them. Are they supposed to go against the frame inside the head of the shocker? It looks like they are that way on several photos. If so the hole in the rail would need enlargement and probably a washer between frame and rail to get round the way the lug goes.
If on the out side of the shocker head then a big spacer is needed between the guard and the rail.
I've read about such a spacer on Greg Bender's site but photos of bikes indicates it is not a regular way to do it and it definitely looks neater right against the frame.
What's the best way please? I'm using a single sprung seat and a luggage rack which will have a bitch seat eventually.

If I recall correctly, outside the shock, spacer on rear mount.  I don't have the grab handles on my Ambo, but I do have spacers if you need them.

Thanks Cam, I can make spacers, and I think you are right, though I've seen both ways.
Inevitably on the outside with a dual seat but with single seats it seems some set them further in.
I don't want to drill out my brand new grab rails if it's frowned upon but it seems to be a bit neater that way.
If I did I'd fit it on the shocker side of the thin hex head that bolts up the stud rather than right against the frame.

I just went out to the garage to have a look.  Definitely OUTSIDE the shock, and a spacer INSIDE the rear mount handle mount.   If you put the handle inside the shock, it will stand it off at an angle from the frame -  Not good. Keep in mind, I don't use the grab handles.  In the photo I just put the spacer in place on top of my police bag mounts for visual reference.
