Good for him.  I thought for a moment someone else had died today since unfortunately for some reason a lot of people do pass this time of year.

Yes, we've lost a lot of people this year, I thought maybe it would be nice to have a post for someone who hasn't died.

I remember him performing one handed pushups on Johnny Carson's show. That was shortly before Carson left so he would have to have been in his early 70s or so at the time. He played some great characters.

Yes, I've always been impressed with his appeal and success. He grew up in Amsterdam, NY, 30 minutes south of me and I still remember going to a wrestling camp one summer at St. Lawrence U and staring in awe at his photos in the wrestling room. It was just awesome to me that someone from humble beginnings close by made it big. Too many excellent movie roles to list. Go Kirk!

Ben Hur

Kirk Douglas wanted the role of Ben Hur, but Charlton Heston got it .... and defined the role from there on out!

I recall a famous actor being feted on a talk show once, he was referred to as a "great man", to which he replied "not really, I'm just good at pretending to be something I'm not". Outside of the film industry, you'd wear a different tag. BTW, did anyone notice Alan Barnett also passed away on the same day as Kirk Douglas ?

I've always like Kirk Douglas's "oar walk" in the Vikings.

Along with "Lonely are the Brave" and "Paths of Glory".

Maybe it's time to rewatch some old movies.......

He was sorta ok, but a bit "B" grade really don't y'all think ? A bit like Burt Lancaster, kind of bearable if you didn't take him too seriously and wanted a giggle.

No, Kirk and Burt are/were A all the way-some of the lesser seen films from either are quite good.

Yeah I guess where I went wrong was imagining either of them alongside Al Pacino or Sir Anthony Hopkins or De Niro and icons of that ilk, but I guess if you don't do something like that, then they'll probably fly sort of ok, in a daytime TV kind of way. If the rain had stopped and I was waiting for the road to dry before getting the bike out, I could probably doze through half of a Kirk Douglas movie. If you'd taken your first "nice" girlfriend to the cinema and sat in the back at a KD flick, you might develop a taste for his work obliquely, just try not to get too interested in the film!

Woops ! I think I've made an un characteristic error, NO I hear you say... I thought he'd passed away, now I can sleep soundly. I saw a news grab, of him very recently and got that impression . Was he in weekend at Bernies, a cinematic classic to be sure.

Hopkins is superb, de Niro is decent though he's been playing himself a while. Pacino, not so much. None of them 100 years old, either.

He was a little too convincing in his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter.

There was a piece in the paper here about it and it led the diarist to recount that Kirk's other son (not Michael) who opted for a career in comedy, his name escapes me.

Apparently he was not very good (euphemism  for bloody awful.)

So he's doing this dire routine at the Comedy Club in London and it's going down like a lead balloon and to cap it all off he's getting feedback (abuse) from the audience.

He can't take it any more, goes into a tirade finishing off with "I'm Kirk Douglas's Son"

To which a member of the audience promptly stands up and shouts "NO!! I'm Kirk Douglas's son" then another member stands up and repeats "NO! I'm Kirk Douglas's son" and so it went on
